Timberwolves vs. Grizzlies Prediction

The Timberwolves currently sit at 10-11, as they have struggled to gel on offense with new faces in the mix, most notably Rudy Gobert. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies enter this game with a 12-8 record and have continued to be the flashy offense from last season. However, a wrench has been thrown into the mix for Minnesota, as Karl Anthony-Towns is now injured for a few weeks with a calf injury. Could this be a good thing for the Timberwolves as they try to figure things out on offense?

The Timberwolves have been struggling with the mix of Rudy Gobert and KAT. One on hand, Gobert is one of the best, if not THE best defensive center in the league. He leads the teams by miles in rebounds with 12.4 per game and is excellent at shutting down the paint. In their first and only meeting of the season, Gobert shut down the paint, and Steven Adams only had three points. Granted, Adams is not a huge scoring threat, but the big man still only had one field goal all game. In the end, it was a winnable game for the Wolves, but the Grizzlies outrebounded the Wolves 46-33, which is where the KAT/Gobert discussion comes in. Gobert is a better defensive player who can bring down more boards, but KAT is the better offensive player. Well, now some questions will be answered, as the Wolves will have to find their way without their second-leading scorer for the next few weeks.

With KAT's injury, it's obvious that Gobert's minutes will increase. He was averaging 31 minutes before, so it's safe to say that could rise to 37-38 minutes or so. This means more scoring opportunities as the main center on the floor, as well as more chances for defensive and offensive rebounds. Gobert is averaging 13.8 points per game and 12.7 rebounds per game, a number that could see a slight increase with his increased minutes. The Wolves are not a very deep team as it is, especially after they traded away key bench players in the Rudy Gobert trade.

Memphis is a weak defensive team, ranking 22nd in defensive efficiency. They rely on their potent offense to get it done, and it has worked for them so far. While the Wolves were an offensive team, they have actually shifted with Gobert on the team to a stronger defense than offense. Both teams are also above-average in pace, with Minnesota coming in at the fourth-highest pace and Memphis at 11th. This means this could be a back-and-forth, high-scoring game. The matchup back on November 11th only ended with 217 points, but both teams shot unusually badly in that game. I think we see Gobert open up offensively in this game while he continues to be the main rebounder on the team. With more possessions and more minutes, Gobert should pass his average of 26.5 points and rebounds per game. His line of only 27.5 for tonight, which feels low with KAT's absence. I'm on the over.
