Miami faces off against Pitt in the first round of the ACC tournament at Greensboro Coliseum. Miami has suffered some huge blows this season from injury. The Canes lost point guard Chris Lykes early in the season, who led the show for this team. Without Lykes it has been sophomore guard Isaiah Wong and senior guard Kameron McGusty leading this squad with help from senior guard Elijah Olaniyi. The canes rely heavily on these 3 and will need them to have it goin come Tuesday.
Pitt is backed by Justin Champagnie who had can fill it up quickly. Champagnie was named first team all ACC this year averaging 18.4 points and 11.1 rebounds. Dude averages a double double. But outside of Justin Champagnie there isn’t much help. Pitt has lost 2 of their best guards to the transfer portal. Junior guard Au’diese Toney and Xavier Johnson.
Miami rebounds the ball very well which will play a huge advantage in this game. I think Jim Larrañaga is going to be able to game plan for Justin Champagnie and really take the ball out of his hands. Pitt won’t be able to keep up with McGusty and Wong as I expect these two to have a big night. Miami was hit hard by injuries early in the year, but they are as healthy as they’ve been out side Chris Lykes. My one worry for Miami is that they are not very dep at all. They rank 200th in tempo and play at a slow pace due to a lack of reserves. Pitt won the first matchup between the two 70-55 back in mid-December, but that was with their two best guards Tony and Johnson. I expect Miami to roll and I’ll take the points in this matchup, but I could see a Miami burial.
