Syracuse vs. Houston Predictions & Sweet 16 Picks: Syracuse to Keep it Close
No. 11 Syracuse is one of the best Cinderella stories of the tournament through Rounds 1 & 2. With that run has come the emergence of Buddy Boeheim as a household name. Head coach Jim Boeheim’s son is averaging 27.5 points per game after putting up 30 in the team’s Round 1 win over SDSU and 25 in Round 2 against West Virginia.
For Houston, they cruised to an easy win over Cleveland State in the Round of 64, 87-56, before just squeaking by Rutgers in a 63-60 win. The Cougars are led by their own star in Quentin Grimes. Grimes averaged 18.1 points per game throughout the season.
Houston has dominated all season, en route to a 26-3 record, but Syracuse has looked like one of the hottest teams in the tourney. It’s the classic team that played great all season vs. the team that got hot at the right time betting dilemma.
Our odds grid here tell the story, with Houston sporting really short moneyline odds. They're -250 on the moneyline, odds indicative of a 71.4% chance the Cougars top Syracuse and book a ticket to the Elite 8.

Syracuse vs. Houston Against The Spread Pick
As mentioned above, Syracuse is one of the most surprising teams in this year’s NCAA Tournament. Buddy Boheim and Joe Girard III are shooting lights out and giving The Orange to win against any team in the field.
Girard is already an upstate New York legend. He started playing varsity basketball in 8th grade, accumulated an insane 4,763 points in his high school career and brought Glens Falls its first state title. When he committed to Syracuse in 2019, it set the upstate NY area on fire and he continues to build his legacy in the area.
He and Buddy Boeheim are two of the better shooters left in the tournament and will have to continue to be if they expect to compete with Houston this weekend. According to KenPom, Houston is the 11th ranked defensive team, 11th ranked offense and fourth overall.
But, Syracuse can score points, it’s just going to be a matter of if they can keep up with Grimes, Marcus Sasser and DeJon Jarreau.
Houston is one of the best teams still alive, and I think they still win this one, but I expect it to be close. Boeheim, Girard III and the rest of the Orange are playing strong. They’ve lost just one game in the month of March and it was to a good Virginia team.
