Through two games, the Illinois Fighting Illini and the Marquette Golden Eagles are undefeated at 2-0. Now both teams will play in the Gavitt Tipoff Games in Fiserv Forum, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, giving Marquette a home game for the headliner.

Illinois has two wins against poor opponents, knocking off Jacksonville State and Arkansas State at home with ease. Meanwhile, it hasn’t been as easy for Marquette, as the Golden Eagles defeated Southern Illinois by 11 and New Hampshire by just five.

There aren’t many familiar faces on Marquette, but the new squad has plenty of exciting talent. Will the Golden Eagles have enough to take down a ranked Illinois team?

Here are our picks and predictions for the Illinois vs Marquette game on Monday, November 15.

Illinois vs Marquette Prediction

The Illinois Fighting Illini have been wiping out their mid-major competition without Kofi Cockburn manning the middle. Cockburn averaged 17.7 points per game while rebounding 9.5 boards last season and will return in about a week after his suspension is up.

Still, without Cockburn, Illinois has shown just how deep they can be. The Fighting Illini added Alfonsso Plummer from Utah and Omar Payne from Florida and continue to develop insane talent annually. The starting lineup consists of familiar faces like Andre Curbelo, Trent Frazier, Da’Monte Williams and Jacob Grandison. Of course, Cockburn will also be starting when given the chance but for now Payne has been given the starting job.

Through their first two games of the season, Illinois is scoring 81.5 points per game and allowing just 50 points per game while grabbing 50.5 rebounds per game. Just wait until Cockburn comes back.

Either way, Illinois has so much depth and should be a force in the Big Ten all season long. The Fighting Illini lost three key players but kept everyone else around. Due to the few losses, Illinois added a couple solid transfers, and as stated above has developed all of their other talent.

Meanwhile, Marquette hasn’t looked all that great to start the season. Despite a 2-0 record, Marquette is allowing 73.5 points per game against poor competition while only shooting 42.6 percent from the field.

The Golden Eagles have just two key returners and lost five players mostly due to the transfer portal. Of course, Shaka Smart is now the coach for Marquette after leaving Texas and he was able to bring in some new players and quality transfers including Darryl Morsell from Maryland and Kur Kuath from Oklahoma.

Except for the fact that Kuath played 13 minutes, had four rebounds and no points against New Hampshire in their last game. Morsell will be the key player for Marquette, but they’ll need more guys to step up. The depth is also lacking a bit as most of the bench consists of freshmen.

Therefore, I’ll take Illinois and lay the points. Marquette being home will help them in this situation but Illinois is clearly the better team moving forward.
