The Memphis Tigers will take on the Virginia Tech Hokies in the Upsie NIT Season Tip-Off. Coincidently, these former NIT teams are currently undefeated and looking to stay that way through this one. Memphis has added a ton of high-level transfers and is completely different compared to last year. The Tigers have defeated solid opponents like Western Kentucky and St. Louis.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech hasn’t played any team in the Top 150 via KenPom but has looked fantastic while playing against these lower-tier teams. Here are our picks and predictions for the Memphis vs. Virginia Tech game on Wednesday, November 24.

Virginia Tech vs. Memphis Prediction

The Memphis Tigers have looked incredible offensively to start the season. The young squad is shooting a 59.2 percent effective field goal percentage while snatching 41.1 percent offensive rebounds. The Tigers have shot 60 percent inside and 38.5 percent from outside while getting to the line at one of the highest rates in college basketball to start the season. However, having youth in a fast-paced offense usually leads to man turnovers. Memphis is turning the ball over 27.2 percent of the time, which is one of the highest rates in all of college basketball. However, the Tigers have also been able to force 25.3 percent turnovers on the year.

Memphis is led by two freshmen studs, including Jalen Duren, who averages a double-double per game, and Emoni Bates, who is scoring 13.3 points per game. No player on Memphis averages 30 minutes a game, with Bates leading the minutes per game on Memphis with 28.5 minutes. The Tigers are currently using 40.6 percent of their minutes from the bench, which is 16th in the nation.

Meanwhile, Memphis is currently ranked as the best defense in the nation via adjusted defensive efficiency. The Tigers have held opponents to a 37.9 percent effective field goal percentage while allowing teams to shoot just 24.2 percent from three and 38.8 percent from long range.

On the other hand, Virginia Tech is 5-0 and has held their opponents to just 48.2 points per game this season. Again, the Hokies haven’t faced insane competition, but the way they’ve dominated the smaller teams proves just how great Virginia Tech can be. Offensively, the Hokies are shooting 42.5 percent from long range and 55.2 percent from inside the arc. However, they’ve had trouble getting to the foul line at a high rate. The good news is that they’ve also kept opponents off the line as well. The Hokies have also held teams to just 17.5 percent from long distance and have also held opponents to a 38 percent effective field goal percentage.

Plus, despite Memphis using just 14.2 seconds per possession, Virginia Tech has forced opponents to use 19.4 seconds per possession this season. If the Hokies slow down Memphis, this game should go under the total.
