St. Bonaventure vs. Northern Iowa Prediction: Can St. Bonaventure Stay Undefeated at Home?

The St. Bonaventure Bonnies are coming off three straight top 100 wins to start the season 5-0. Now the Bonnies will look to take down a lower-tier opponent in Northern Iowa. The Northern Iowa Panthers have lost three straight division I games but haven’t looked terrible to start the year. Still, two of those three losses were by double digits and it won’t get easier against a Bonnies team that just took down Boise State, Clemson, and Marquette in one week.

As a double-digit favorite, can the St. Bonaventure Bonnies cover the spread against Northern Iowa Panthers? Here are our picks and predictions for Northern Iowa vs St. Bonaventure.

St. Bonaventure vs. Northern Iowa Prediction

To start the season, Northern Iowa has had a weird start to the season on the defensive end. The Panthers have allowed an effective field goal percentage of 55.6 percent and have only turned the ball over 11.7 percent of the time. However, despite not forcing turnovers, the Panthers are the best team in the nation when it comes to defensive rebounding. Northern Iowa has allowed just 17.7 percent of offensive rebounds from opponents, which leads the entire nation. Nonetheless, Northern Iowa allows teams to shoot 58.1 percent inside the arc.

So first, the Panthers actually need to get stops before they can grab a defensive rebound. On the offensive end, Northern Iowa has also struggled. The Panthers have an effective field goal percentage of 43.5 percent and are shooting just 39.3 percent from inside the arc this season. The Panthers will shoot from long range and aren’t shy from deep, but they’re only shooting 32.1 percent from long range. And while the Panthers dominate the defensive glass, they’re only grabbing 19.1 percent of offensive rebounds. So while they limit offensive rebounds, they don’t grab offensive rebounds either.

This game will more than likely have a lot of one-and-done with players getting fatigued from running up and down the court. Neither team has much depth, with both teams giving their bench under 25 percent of the minutes.

However, St. Bonaventure has one of the more experienced teams in the nation, and it’s shown so far this season. The Bonnies have turned the ball over just 15.1 percent of the time and are shooting 53.2 percent inside the arc. Jarren Holmes, Kyle Lofton, and Jalen Adaway have been the big three for the Bonnies to start the season and have averaged 47.7 points per game. They’re going to be the more conditioned team, and they’ll limit turnovers while limiting more opportunities for Northern Iowa. I’ll gladly take St. Bonaventure against the spread in this one.
