Duke vs. Virginia Tech Prediction: Will Duke Start ACC Play With a Win?

ACC conference play has already begun for many teams in the conference. However, Duke will play its first conference game of the season as they welcome the Virginia Tech Hokies to Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Duke Blue Devils are currently 10-1 on the season with the lone loss coming against Ohio State, on the road. Duke collapsed in that game towards the end and has really been on point throughout the entire season.

Meanwhile, KenPom has Virginia Tech ranked as the 22nd best team in the nation, despite having an 8-4 record. The Hokies are coming off a big win against St. Bonaventure, but already have losses to Memphis, Xavier, Wake Forest, and Dayton. That Wake Forest game was the first ACC matchup for the Hokies as well.

Can Virginia Tech stick around on the road against a dangerous Duke team? Here are our picks and predictions for the ACC conference game between the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Duke Blue Devils.

Duke Blue Devils vs. Virginia Tech Hokies Prediction

It looks as though oddsmakers added the “Duke tax” to the sports betting lines tonight. Duke is 10-1 on the season and has been incredible all year long. But the Blue Devils are nearly 10-point favorites against a Virginia Tech team that has so much potential this year.

Virginia Tech is shooting 40 percent from deep this season while also hitting 50.2 percent of shots inside the arc. The Hokies don’t turn the ball over often and should have some success on the offensive boards, knowing Duke has allowed 27.5 percent offensive rebounds on the year.

For Virginia Tech, it’ll be hard to get to the line at a high pace against Duke, but if three-point shooting is on point, Virginia Tech will be on point. But it’s not just the offense that has excelled this season for Virginia Tech. It’s the defense. Virginia Tech is shooting 40 percent from long range but also holding opponents to just 25.5 percent from long range. That’s a huge difference and a really big reason for the Hokies’ success.

Virginia Tech is also holding opponents to a 44.6 percent effective field goal percentage while turning the ball over 22.2 percent against its opponents. On top of that, the Hokies have done well on the defensive glass and also limited opponents from getting to the line.

It’s not going to be easy for Duke to score, despite the Blue Devils shooting an effective field goal percentage of 56 percent. Duke will have success inside and that should really be the emphasis in this game for the Blue Devils. Duke is shooting 56.3 percent inside the arc while Virginia Tech is holding opponents to 48.6 percent. But again, if Virginia Tech is capable of knocking down long-range jumpers at a consistent pace like they’ve done all season, there’s no reason to think Virginia Tech will get smashed by double digits.
