St. Bonaventure vs. VCU Prediction

The problem is VCU is one of the hottest teams in the country, winning seven games in a row. In contrast, Saint Bonaventure is the complete opposite as they've been getting their butt kicked, losing a few in a row and almost a third in a row against a very bad team in La Salle, which they needed overtime to escape as a winner. There is a reason, though, and that is COVID, as Saint Bonaventure hadn't played since December 17, 2021, when they lost by 37 points at Virginia Tech (shocker of the year for us). It was their worst performance of the year, hands down. Of course, that long break didn't help as they stunk it up against LaSalle (the coach was quoted as saying he could tell the layoff affected them, and it took a while to get their mojo back). Looking closer into the game, you can see that LaSalle was just getting all the rebounds and shot better, especially from the three-point line, and they usually would have won. Still, St. Bonnie got it together and clamped down on defense as they were down 61-51 with 8:57 left and held Lasalle to 9 points the rest of the way as the senior 5 got it together. More importantly, Saint Bonaventure played only five guys the whole game, including overtime, so obviously, those guys had some tired legs late in the game. Still, we expect Saint Bonaventure to be fully ready and healthy tonight. As we mentioned, VCU is red hot, undefeated in the conference, on a seven-game winning streak they haven't lost since they played a good Connecticut team. They do have their drawbacks though they are a very bad free-throw shooting team shooting under 65%, which is 336th in the country. That's just embarrassing. If you flip to the other side, Saint Bonaventure is 77% from the free-throw line 29th in the country, a huge difference in a close game down the stretch. The VCU offense is one of the worst in the country; they are ranked 225 in field-goal percentage, and that is their highest ranking of any offensive category(pathetic). You may be wondering how does this team win clearly with their defense as they hold opponents to 37% field goal percentage, which is fifth in the country and even better only 24.7% field-goal percentage on three-pointers which is the second-best in the country. Saint Bonaventure is a senior-led team. Not only that, all five starters average double figures in points, both of their starting guards average over four assists a game, and they have four guys averaging over 5.5 rebounds a game. This is as good a senior five as there is in the NCAA, and we had the FAB 5 with Michigan years ago. This is the Old 5 with St. Bonnie. When the game is on the line, any one of these guys can step it up. This team is truly a team where all five seniors play together. The game is at home in St. Bonaventure in a small gym, one of the best home-court advantages in the NCAA. The coach has been quoted as saying the 25-day layoff affected the team clearly, and he noticed in the last 10 minutes they started playing like themselves, and that should carry over with a game under their belt. We expect the Senior 5 to get some rest tonight, we already mentioned VCU awful free throw shooting, which will hurt them tonight down the stretch as a huge advantage, and VCU has really played two great teams all year and lost to both in Baylor and Uconn. We think St Bonnie is a good team as they started the season ranked, and because of all of this, we expect the Bonnies to go to 2-0 in conference with a 9 point victory over VCU tonight. What a great way to spend your Friday night with a watch and win on ESPN2. Lay the bucket and get enough cheddar to fill one tonight.
