Monday's Best Bets in College Basketball: Heading Back to the CAA

On Monday, there aren't a ton of college basketball games on the slate. Still, handicapper Joey Ruiz has found two games that he loves, starting with a CAA semifinal between Towson and Delaware. For the nightcap, Joey goes out west for the WCC semifinal.

Towson vs. Delaware Prediction

The last time these 2 teams played, one of the weirder things of the college basketball season happened. A few moments into the second half, the game was actually stopped and postponed to a later date due to unsafe court conditions because players kept slipping and falling.

Delaware had 2 players roll their ankles in this game and those players actually ended up missing a few games due to this injury. Delaware was up 11 points at halftime and was up 9 points when the game was stopped 1 minute into the second half. The game then resumed almost a month later and Towson absolutely demolished Delaware. Towson outscored the Blue Hens 40-19 after the re-start and never looked back as they eventually won the game by 12 points.

I think Towson will be able to carry that momentum and confidence built in that second half into a strong 1H performance tonight. Towson also started very slow in their first CAA tournament game against Northeastern, so I have to think starting fast will be an emphasis for them tonight.

Towson has been a very solid offensive team this season as they are currently ranked 42nd in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency, 9th in offensive rebounding percentage, 48th in 3-point percentage, and 75th in offensive effective field goal percentage.

Delaware has struggled on the defensive side of the ball as they are ranked 240th in adjusted defensive efficiency, 289th in defensive 3-point percentage, and most importantly ranked 290th in defensive rebounding percentage.

I expect Towson to control the boards both on offense and defense which should lead to more scoring opportunities for the Tigers. With that being said I am rolling with Towson 1H -2 at -116 for one of my most confident college basketball picks of the night.

San Francisco vs. Gonzaga Prediction

The last time these two teams played I was heavily on Gonzaga, and they came through for me. This time around, I am not touching either side, but instead, I am rolling with the over.

Gonzaga has been one of the best offensive teams in the country this season and they have scored a majority of their points in the 1H. A lot of the time, 1H totals in college basketball are set lower compared to 2H totals to account for the fouls that may take place at the end of games when the losing team is trying to extend the game. In this game, I do not believe fouls will be an issue at the end which means there is some really good value on the 1H over here.

Gonzaga is currently ranked 2nd in the nation in overall adjusted defensive efficiency, 2nd in offensive effective field goal percentage, 2nd in offensive 2-point percentage, and 18th in 3-point percentage. Even more importantly, they are second in the country in lowest time of possession at 14.5 seconds which should lead to more possessions and scoring opportunities for both teams.

Pace is one of the main things I look for handicapping overs because shooting is a day-to-day statistic but if we can pinpoint the average number of possessions for each team and compare them to their 1H tendencies, we can find real value on overs. The last time these two faced each other, it was a shootout and while I do not expect it to be that high scoring again, I think this total is a bit too low. With that being said, I am rolling with the San Francisco and Gonzaga 1H OVER 73 at -106 for one of my most confident college basketball picks of the night.
