Gonzaga vs. Memphis Prediction: Trust the Tigers to Keep It Close

The last game of the card tonight, and they truly did save the best for last. This game is the game I am looking forward to all day today. If there is one team Gonzaga didn't want to see in the bracket, it's this team as no one wanted to see Memphis. This team plays its best basketball and has enough athletes to hang with anyone. Plus, they got Emoni Bates back and healthy and he will play about 15-20 minutes. This is the last team anyone should want to face right now. So, let's break down this TBS matchup between the #1 Zags and the dangerous Tigers of Memphis.

Gonzaga didn't look like the best team on Thursday as the #16 seed Georgia St was hanging with them for more than half the game and even had a lead with 13 minutes left until Holmgren took over. If they play like that today, they will join the 16 seed in watching the tournament the rest of the way. Personally not a fan of Drew Timme. He looks like a weaker, less talented Christian Laettner wants to be, and he is not a future NBA player. Gonzaga is playing a team that is just as if not more athletic and is playing with nothing to lose. At the same time, Gonzaga has all the pressure in the world on them to duplicate last year and make it to the title game, but sadly it won't be against Baylor as they are the first #1 seed we have knocked out of this tournament.

Gonzaga last covered a game on February 24th. Before that, it was February 10th. They have been getting inflated lines all year, so if you bet them all year, you didn't win. Chet Holmgren will be facing someone who can match up with him like no one else in the conference can in 6'11 Jalen Duren with his physicality. For the Zags to win, the guards must step up as Memphis' best guard, Alex Lomax might have been hurt in the first game against Boise, and if he's not healthy, the Bulldogs can take massive advantage of that.

As in most games, the defense will be crucial, and if you have been watching, Memphis has stepped up the defense in the first half of games as they have allowed just over 30 points in the first half and recently have cut that down to 27 points allowed which is why they have won 13 of their last 15 games. This is a very athletic team, and with Bates back, a team with long arms, which makes it hard to make baskets. This team has given up less than 70 points in seven of their last eight games. They are one of the best teams in the country, giving up less than 40% shooting on field goals(22 in the country). Out of all the teams that the Zags would want to play in Round 2, this is the last one. Memphis getting double digits from anyone is pretty crazy, especially with a limited Bates as they were a double-digit dog once this year (no Bates), and they won 69-59 to Houston on the road, which is a very impressive win.

We feel getting double digits with this team is insane as this is an even battle, a game that will come down to the wire, and because of Memphis's bad free-throw shooting 69% (270th in the country), that will be their ultimate demise. However, we will gladly take the 10 at Wynn Bet and hope we end the night with the best game of the day. We hope we win more than a Penny on this one, as will you if you take the double digits.
