ANALYSIS

Providence vs. Richmond Prediction: Should You Fear the Friars?

The Providence Friars will clash with the Richmond Spiders on Saturday night for the rights to the Sweet 16. These two teams took quite the opposite paths to this game. The Friars had an electric start to their season, showing that they were one of the best teams in all of the county. They went on to win the regular-season Big East title.

Providence vs. Richmond Line Movement

The Spiders did not have a great regular season and ended up in the middle of the pack in the Atlantic 10. The only path to the big dance for the Spiders was to win the Atlantic 10 Championship, and they were able to shock the nation and do that. The Spiders came back from multiple large deficits and eventually knocked off the Davidson Wildcats to punch their ticket to March Madness. They are playing with a lot of momentum at the moment after pulling off a huge win over the Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa came into this tournament as one of the hottest teams in college basketball, but the Spiders were good enough to beat them on Thursday afternoon. This should be a great battle on Saturday night between two very good teams.

The play I will be turning to in this game is going to be to back the Friars of Providence. I love a good Cinderella story, but March Madness is not always a fairy tale. There is a superior difference in talent between these two teams, particularly at the center position. Providence has size that Richmond is going to struggle to match up with. This is a very good defensive team for the Friars as we know, and Richmond is an offense that has shown they struggle to score in bunches.

Providence should be able to play at the tempo they want for the majority of the game, and I believe they will get more chances to score due to their ability to rebound the ball on the offensive end. Nate Watson should have excellent matchups for this game so look for him to have a breakout game. I once again think this line is pretty disrespectful to Providence, similar to their line in the first round against South Dakota State.
