USC Upstate vs. South Alabama Prediction

USC Upstate is a team out of the Big South Conference, who has been really impressive this season as underdogs. In their first game of this tournament, they went on the road and defeated Appalachian State as 10-point underdogs. All year they have thrived in this role as they actually have three straight-up wins on the season when they are underdogs of 9 points or more. Even as heavy underdogs, they managed to cover spreads against the likes of Ohio, Furman, South Carolina, Charlotte, and ETSU.

USC Upstate has been able to stay in games this year thanks to their ability to knock down outside shots. They are currently 46th in the nation in 3-point shooting and score 33.9% of their points from deep which is above the national average. USC Upstate doesn't crash the offensive boards very often but I think they may have some success tonight against a South Alabama team who is very lackadaisical with their rebounding. South Alabama is ranked 321st in the nation in defensive rebounding percentage so I think USC Upstate may have an advantage on the boards here, and we all know the best time to shoot a 3 is off an offensive rebound while the defense is collapsed leaving the 3-point line unguarded.

South Alabama has been a solid defensive team this season as they are currently ranked 54th in defensive effective field goal percentage, 41st in defensive turnover percentage, and 53rd in defensive 2-point percentage but they really struggled in the home stretch of the season. They are 5-6 over their last 11 games including a very surprising loss as double-digit favorites to Arkansas Little Rock in the Sun Belt League tournament. They also blew a huge lead in their opening game to SE Louisiana in this post season tournament and nearly lost the game straight up but held on for the 2-point win. They were 10-point favorites in that game against SELA, so their track record shows me that they really aren't good in this role as heavy favorites as they just can't seem to put teams away.

South Alabama can also go through long scoring droughts at times, due to their inability to make outside shots and how turnover prone they can be. They have had at least five games in the last month where they failed to top 62 points, including an 18-point loss to Appalachian State where they could only manage 51. USC Upstate scored the ball fairly easily on a solid Appalachian State defense and think they can have success against the Jaguars again tonight. With that being said, I am rolling with USC Upstate 1H +5.5 at -117 and Full Game +9 -110, both for 1U, as 2 of my most confident college basketball picks of the night.
