Fresno State vs. Southern Utah Prediction

This year Fresno State had a fairly successful season out of the Mountain West as they come into this game with a 21-13 record. Fresno State is known for being a very good defensive team. They are currently ranked 36th in adjusted defensive efficiency, 8th in defensive rebounding percentage, and are top 100 in most major defensive categories this season.

Fresno State will also have the best player on the floor in this matchup with Orlando Robinson who I think will be the difference for Fresno State. Robinson is an elite offensive player who is shooting 35% from 3, 52% from 2, and 71% from the line this season so he has been efficient from all three levels. He has a unique combination of size and athleticism that Southern Utah hasn't seen too often this season and think he will have a huge game against this undersized Southern Utah team.

Southern Utah really only has one true post player with Jason Spurgin at 6'11 but he isn't a highflyer and has mid-below average athleticism, so I don't see him being able to slow down Robinson on the inside.

Southern Utah has been one of my favorite teams to back this season, but I don't think this is the best matchup for them. This is a matchup of two very contrasting styles as Fresno State is a stout defensive squad with a lackluster offense and SUU has the offensive firepower but a below-average defense. In these types of matchups, I always give the edge to the better defensive team and the team that plays in the tougher conference.

On the season, Southern Utah is ranked 250th in adjusted defensive efficiency, 245th in defensive effective Field Goal percentage, 250th in defensive Turnover percentage, and 259th in defensive 2-point percentage so they have really struggled on defense this season. Southern Utah had a successful season in the Big Sky, but they struggled when they went on the road to face better competition. They lost by 19 to Saint Mary's and got pummeled by 37 when they played Michigan. Both of those teams are better than Fresno State, but the point is that Fresno State plays the same type of style as those teams.

Fresno State is big, physical, and prides themselves on playing lockdown defense. Southern Utah struggled against that style of play this season and I think they will struggle again tonight. With that being said, I am rolling with Fresno State 1H -3.5 at -110 for 1U as one of my most confident College Basketball picks of the night.
