Michigan State vs. Oregon Prediction, Pick, Odds: Who to Back in the Phil Knight Invitational?

12th-ranked Michigan State matches up with Oregon in the Phil Knight Invitational tonight in Portland, Oregon. The Ducks dropped their first game of the tournament in a 59-83 blowout loss to Connecticut. The Ducks are now 2-3 on the season, with both wins coming over non-power five teams. The Spartans, meanwhile, dropped their first game as well in a 70-81 loss to Alabama. The loss moved Michigan State to 3-2 on the season. Can Tom Izzo and the Spartans bounce back as short -2.5 favorites?

Michigan State vs. Oregon Prediction

The Spartans may only have one more win than the Ducks, but their resume has been one of the toughest in the nation in the process. Three of their first five games have been against ranked teams, and a fourth would be included if you count Villanova's preseason ranking. Their only "easy" game of the season has been their first game against Northern Arizona, a game they easily won. The Spartans could easily be 4-1 as well, as they took a tough one-point loss to one of the best teams in the nation, Gonzaga. Tom Izzo's group has shown a lot of resilience early in the season, and they have fared well against a really tough schedule to open the season. This game against Oregon should be their easiest game since Northern Arizona.

Oregon has played two tough games in a row, but they have also dropped a game to UC Irvine, a home game they should have won (they were 16-point favorites). Although they at least looked competitive against Houston, the same could not be said for last night's affair, as Connecticut blew them out from start to finish. Oregon has really struggled with outside shooting, as they have shot 27.3% from three, 325th in the nation. They have also turned it over at a 21.4% rate on offense, which ranks 273rd.

The Ducks have lost three out of their last four games and have looked lost on offense in the process. They have really struggled to find their shooting arms, and have also been lackluster from the charity stripe. The Spartans have played excellent defense to start the season, even against some top-tier competition, which is expected for a Tom Izzo-coached team. Even without Malik Hall, Michigan State has been able to produce on offense and crash the board for second-chance points. Michigan State has been the stronger team through their first five games, and I think they bounce back from the loss against Alabama last night.
