UAB vs. FAU Prediction
Unlike the Owls, it hasn’t been sunshine and rainbows for UAB this season. They are currently fourth in conference play, falling short of all preseason expectations. Star point guard Jelly Walker has been in and out of the lineup with injury and is projected to be back for the Blazer tonight. This will be a huge shot in the arm for UAB in a must-win game on their home court.
These conference rivals faced off last month, in a game that went down to the wire. FAU pulled it out in a high-scoring shootout, winning 88-86. Scoring 80+ points is nothing new for UAB, they have a top-35-rated offense in the country. FAU, on the other hand, usually wins with defense. Although the Owls have been a pleasant surprise this year, don’t expect them to put up 80+ points again tonight in Birmingham.
UAB has impressed me lately with their improved efforts on the defensive side of the ball. Even with Jelly Walker out of the lineup, guys like KJ Buffen and Ledarrius Brewer have stepped up. Could Walker’s absence have helped some of these UAB role players find their groove heading into the latter half of the season? We’ll find out tonight.
Andy Kennedy, who I consider one of the most underrated coaches in college basketball, will have his boys ready to play tonight with or without Jelly Walker. UAB being the favorite tells me he will play, and what better opportunity for a future NBA draft pick to showcase his talents on national television? Back the Blazers to get it done at home in what should be the game of the night.
