Michigan State vs. Maryland Prediction: Trust the Spartans to Roll
It’s been an up-and-down season for Michigan State, to say the least. After starting off the season exceeding everyone’s expectations, Sparty has cooled off recently, losing three of their last four games. Tonight they welcome Maryland to East Lansing. The Terps have been a covering machine, sitting at 16-7 ATS on the season. Tom Izzo and Michigan State will have their hands full, but I expect them to battle and find a way to win this game.
Let's get into my pick for tonight.

Michigan State vs. Maryland Prediction
The main issue I had with the Spartans heading into the season was that they didn’t have a closer. They have a talented roster but didn’t have that guy to take over a game and close it out. Well, the Spartans have found that closer in Tyson Walker. We’ve seen him step up and take over games against formidable opponents like Purdue and Rutgers, and I expect him to close this one out tonight on his home court. Both Walker and Hauser are shooting over 40% from three. If they do their jobs tonight, Maryland won’t have the shooting ability to keep up with the Spartans.
Senior forward Malik Hall has stepped up of late, pulling down 13 rebounds in his last game against an outstanding Rutgers rebounding team. He will contain Donta Scott and take him out of this game offensively, leaving Jahmir Young alone to find a way to win. I like Michigan States' chances if Hall straps up Scott as expected. Hall and Mady Sissoko should dominate the paint against Maryland’s soft frontcourt. Donta Scott and Julian Reese are great offensive bigs for the Terps but lack the defensive tenacity needed to suppress Michigan State in the paint.
Joe Lunardi still projects Michigan State to make the tournament, an accomplishment they’ve achieved 24 seasons in a row. I don’t expect this streak to come to an end this year. Tom Izzo will have his guys locked in for a must-win matchup. The Spartans are in a great spot tonight, and I have no issues putting my hard-earned money on Tom Izzo taking care of business.
East Lansing is one of the toughest arenas to play in the country. Kevin Willard’s makeshift team will struggle tonight on the road like they have all year. Although I’ve been impressed with the Terps in Willard’s first season, Izzo still carries a significant coaching advantage. Michigan State ends their two-game skid and gets a much-needed Big Ten win in front of Sparty Nation tonight.
