UConn vs. Marquette Prediction

Marquette is 11-2 in the Big East, which is good for first place in the conference tied with Xavier. The Golden Eagles earned their highest ranking in the Shaka Smart era yesterday when they came in number ten in the polls. This is a team that started the year unranked, but they have proved the doubters wrong all season long. Kam Jones has been the best player for Marquette, leading them in scoring, averaging a team-high 15.7 points per game. Marquette has pretty balanced scoring overall, as four of their five starters average double digits.

UConn, meanwhile, just closed out its worst month of the year. They entered January ranked number two in the nation and ended January ranked twenty-fourth. UConn went just 3-5 in the month, including losing to Marquette 82-76 on January 11th. Despite the cold run, UConn feels that they are a team that is capable of going on a run for a national championship. Adama Songo has been the star of the team averaging 17.2 points per game and 7.2 rebounds.

Songo will need to step up tonight for the Huskies if they want to get his win on their home floor. Jordan Hawkins is right behind Songo in terms of scoring, putting up 16.3 points per game. He is the best pure shooter the Huskies have, and if he can get hot tonight, Marquette will be in for a world of trouble. UConn enters play as a four-point favorite. 

I am backing UConn here but sipping on a little bit of juice. This is the exact same line that we saw last night with Texas vs. Kansas and I am doing the exact same thing.

UConn is the better overall team in my eyes, despite the rankings. They are also a very difficult team to beat on their home floor, playing to the tune of an 11-2 home record. The Huskies have an advantage in the paint tonight with Songo and I expect him to dominate this game. Marquette will likely show him doubles which will open up their shooters and create easy looks. I do not think Marquette has a good enough defense to win this game on the road tonight. Let’s stay hot and cash in!
