LMU vs. Gonzaga Prediction

It was only a few weeks ago when Loyola Marymount traveled to Gonzaga and defeated the Bulldogs in one of the most shocking upsets in years. That loss ended Gonzaga’s 75 home-game winning streak, the longest active home winning streak in college basketball. Will LMU defeat Gonzaga for a second time, or will the Bulldogs seek revenge?

I don’t typically target teams the second time around who have already pulled off an upset in the first matchup; however, tonight is the exception. Although losers of three of their previous four games, LMU has the recipe for defeating Gonzaga. They’ve already done it once this season. In that first matchup we were blessed with a legacy performance from Cameron Shelton, Loyola Marymount’s star senior. Averaging nearly 21 points per game, there isn’t anyone on Gonzaga who can keep up with the speedy guard.

Gonzaga ranks 227th at defending the three-pointer this season. The top six scorers on the Lions average better than 33% from three. LMU will have plenty of opportunities from deep to not only cover this game but potentially win outright.

The WCC has been extremely impressive this season. This is the deepest I’ve seen this conference in years. Gonzaga typically stream-rolls the entire conference before heading to the tournament, but we’ve seen the Bulldogs struggle mightily at times in conference play, a rare occurrence.

After losing on their home floor to end that 75 game winning streak, Gonzaga’s confidence can’t be high as they hit the road for round two. Cam Shelton’s middle name is Confidence. Expect the Lions to come out hungry; they have nothing to lose. All the pressure resides on Gonzaga.

Stan Johnson deserves a raise for turning around this program. In less than three seasons, the Lions have transitioned from a WCC basement dweller to an extremely competitive team sitting fourth in the conference standings. If LMU can slow down the electric Bulldogs’ offense and take them out of their comfort zone by slowing the game down, they will replicate the result from January. With wins against the WCC’s best (St. Mary’s and Gonzaga) already, the Lions have nothing to lose and will play like it. Don’t be surprised if LMU wins this out outright again.
