ANALYSIS

Nebraska vs. Maryland Prediction: Who Should We Back in This Big Ten Shootout?

When Maryland signed Kevin Willard as their next head coach this offseason, we knew he would return College Park to its old glory. What we didn’t expect was how fast he would get it done. Will the Terps stay hot and earn an impressive road victory, or will Nebraska win their third game in a row as an underdog?

Nebraska vs. Maryland Prediction

The Terps aren’t the only Big Ten team turning some heads lately. Nebraska has beaten Rutgers, Wisconsin, and Penn State in February, with their only loss of the month coming at Michigan. Keisei Tominaga, the junior guard from Japan, is the hottest player in the conference right now. This kid is incredible. If you haven’t heard his story, it’s worth a listen. His recent success has earned recognition from the likes of Steph Curry; the nation is starting to take notice.

Although we didn’t expect Fred Hoiberg’s Huskers to win the Big Ten this season, many thought they’d at least be competitive. After a slow start, Nebraska is hitting their stride at the right time. We know the Terps have struggled on the road this season. With a new coach, system and a handful of transfers, Maryland has yet to establish the confidence and consistency to win conference games on the road. At 2-6 away from College Park on the year, don’t expect this trend to change today.

Let’s not act like Nebraska doesn’t stink at home too. Luckily they are at home today where they’ve won nine of 12 games. There isn’t a more significant home court advantage in all of college basketball than the Big Ten. The only team in the conference with a losing record at home is Minnesota (which debatably shouldn’t even count considering how bad they are). With both teams moving at a snail's pace offensively and a home crowd full of energy, I don’t see how Nebraska doesn’t stay within the number in Lincoln, Nebraska tonight.

Kevin Willard and the Terps are coming off their best win of the season, taking down Zach Edey and No. 3 Purdue by double digits. Maryland is playing their best basketball of the season currently. No chance they will lose to Nebraska after beating Purdue, right? Especially considering when these teams faced off two weeks ago, Maryland won by 19 as 11 point favorites. Fast forward to today and the Terps are only laying five points then the second time around? Wait, it gets better. This line opened at 7.5 and was immediately steamed to 5 before we even got to Sunday. Sharps are hammering the Huskers at home. VSIN reports less than 50% of bets are on Nebraska, but they have 75% of the handle on the spread. If you look at the moneyline, only 10% of bets and handles reside on the home dog. If I could hand pick my ideal betting splits when I pick my bets, they would look very similar to Nebraska’s splits today.

After checking in at a projected 6 seed in March Madness, Maryland stock has never been higher. This is when we fade. Backing the home team in the Big Ten has been a profitable system for years. This is the perfect spot to sell high on the Terps as they hit the road and back Tominaga and the Huskers to get it done. Don’t be surprised if Nebraska wins this one outright.
