It’s been a great year of college basketball in the state of Virginia. Obviously, UVA reigns supreme, but many other schools in the state hold records at or above .500, including Virginia Tech, Liberty, VCU, Richmond, JMU, Norfolk State, and GMU. There’s one other program in the state who’s been heating up of late. After a slow start, Old Dominion is 18-11 in the midst of their best stretch of basketball all season. Will they knock off an elite mid-major in Marshall tonight?

Old Dominion vs. Marshall Prediction
After a disappointing season last year, Dan D'Antoni has the Herd playing their best basketball in years. Taevion Kinsey and Andrew Taylor make up the best backcourt in mid-major college basketball. The former has a chance to play in the NBA after bringing his three-point percentage above 40% this season. The latter can shoot even better. How is ODU going to slow down this dynamic duo?
With a plethora of athletic guards who all average at least a steal a game. Tyreek Scott-Grayson is the best player on the Monarchs. At 6’5” Scott-Grayson has the size and lateral quickness to keep Kinsey in front of him and away from taking over this game. Transfers Chaunce Jenkins and Mekhi Long have been essential addition to this scrappy ODU bunch.
Old Dominion has been tough to beat at home. They are 11-4 when they play in Virginia Beach, Virginia. ODU picked the right time to heat up as we approach the final weeks of the regular season. At 7-3 in their last 10 games, Scott-Grayson and the Monarchs are confident they can beat anyone right now. ODU’s snail pace and defense-first mentality present a unique challenge to the Herd.
Marshall is an elite offensive team, but they don’t play any defense. I give the edge of the two contrasting styles of play to the Monarchs at home. If they can slow down Kinsey and the 38th-rated offense in the nation, taking them out of their comfort zone with immense on-ball pressure, ODU will win this game. Marshall is known for turning the ball over a time or two (or 12 times).
This is the game of the year for Old Dominion. They almost took down Marshall on the road last month. Considering they are currently playing at their highest level, the Monarchs know they can win tonight. This is their Super Bowl. There is limited time for the Monarchs to improve their 5th seed in the Sun Belt. A win tonight would be a monumental step in the right direction. Don’t be shocked if the Monarchs knock off the first-place Herd at home tonight. The line is moving like crazy; grab this number while you still can.
