Purdue was one of the best teams in the nation this year, and they were awarded in this year’s NCAA tournament with a No. 1 seed. Purdue was somewhat of a surprise as I do not think many people expected them to be this good, but the emergence of Zach Edey has solidified them as one of the top three-five teams in the nation this season. Edey is a 7’4 monster on the inside and is a matchup nightmare for nearly every opponent.
Fairleigh Dickinson will have their hands full with Edey in the paint as the Knights do not have a post player over 6’6, so Edey should feast on both ends. Purdue has been one of the most efficient teams in the country on offense this season as they come into the tournament ranked fifth in adjusted offensive efficiency and third in offensive rebounding percentage, largely thanks to Edey.
One thing that Purdue does not do very well is shooting the ball from deep. The Boilermakers shoot just 33% as a team, ranking them at 252nd in the nation. Matt Painter is an exceptional coach and knows his team’s strengths and weaknesses, so I have to believe there will be a concerted effort to feed the ball to Edey and company on the inside instead of relying on their inconsistent shooting.
Purdue also plays at an extremely slow pace and is very methodical on offense, as they are ranked 334th in time of possession per touch at 19.2 seconds. On the defensive end, Purdue is also in the top half of the country in most categories, as they are ranked 22nd in adjusted defensive efficiency and 1st in lowest foul percentage. I do not see how FDU is going to penetrate Edey and this solid Purdue defense, so instead of betting on the game total, I am rolling with FDU TEAM TOTAL UNDER 62 at -115 for 1.5u.
