UConn vs. St. Mary's Prediction
UConn is a team with a lot of length and athleticism at nearly every position. Andre Jackson is one of the most important players for UConn as he isn’t a big score. Still, his length and athleticism make him one of the best perimeter defenders in the country, and is also an excellent rebounder, passer, and finisher around the rim. Jackson will play a key role in defending. Aidan Mahaney is one of the best freshmen in the country and probably the most talented player St. Mary's has on their roster. If Jackson and Company can contain Mahaney and limit him from knocking down shots or driving to the rim, then UConn‘s chance to win will be greatly increased.
Saint Mary’s, much like Princeton, is a very efficient but deliberate offense. The Gaels want to slow the game down and play at a snail's pace, but UConn is perfectly fine playing at any pace and has the athleticism to defend St Mary’s in the halfcourt. Mahaney is the main scoring threat for St Mary’s, and while Logan Johnson and Alex Ducas are good players, they are more system players who get open looks throughout the flow of the offense, which is run through Mahaney.
UConn should be able to neutralize Mahaney through their athleticism, making it harder for St Mary’s role players to get open shots. St Mary’s has had a great season, but I do not see them having enough success on the offensive end to hang with this explosive UConn team that put up 50+ points in the second half of their opening game against Iona. With that being said, I am rolling with UCONN -3.5 at -112 for 1.5u as one of my most confident College Basketball plays of the night
