Roman Gonzalez vs. Julio Cesar Martinez Fight Preview, Prediction, and Pick

Alas, this weekend, we have a bountiful number of combat sports events, ranging from the mid-card of the boxing circuit to the ever-growing UFC regime. If you are a fan of the sweet science especially, there are a couple of matchups that should tickle your fancy in the violence department. In a flyweight duel, Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez looks to face Julio Caesar Martinez. Of course, we as fans should not be this excited for, but nevertheless, we are as the man with the candy name has brought a rejuvenated sense of intrigue and excitement to the smaller divisions. He is looking for a somewhat quick turnaround following his controversial split decision loss at the hands of Juan Francisco Estrada.

Before that minor setback, the Nicaraguan had only lost to one individual, that being the world-renowned tactician in Thailand's own Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. On the other side of the bill and Chocolatito's opponent is Julio Caesar Martinez filling in on short notice to save the payday. Not to be confused with the Mexican icon Caesar Chavez, Martinez is a relatively black and white brawler who had lost his debut bout, only to come back with 18 fights in a row without so much of a hiccup. He wants to disrupt the boxing climate by replacing fellow Mexican Juan Francisco Estrada, who was slated to run back the trilogy with Gonzalez this Saturday. While displaying a great deal of cajones for taking the bout, Martinez might have counted his eggs before they have had the chance to hatch because he missed weight at the contracted 115-pound limit this morning. Assuming this fight continues on schedule for tomorrow, you would have to think that what little momentum that was riding with Martinez has now evaporated, something he wishes his extra pounds could do.

I'm going to be quite frank, apart from some divine intervention where Chocolatio showed up visibly drunk to the weigh-ins, there was no way I was going to go with Martinez from the strength of schedule alone. The fact that Martinez missed weight badly and twice to boot further reinforces that sentiment. I'm not one to believe fighters show up for paychecks or to "lose," but it's hard not to think that way when a short notice goon steps up to the plate ill-advised and overweight. The fact of the matter is Chocolatio has had an entire training camp preparing for a much more formidable opponent; the Nicaraguan also has a tepid style from his orthodox stance that is as beautiful as it's hard to bet against.

The flabby Martinez is going to have his hands full with making a specific weight on Saturday morning, let alone mentally downloading the intricacies of Chocolatito's game. With that and more than my coin is residing with Roman Gonzalez Moneyline to silence the naysayers and strengthen my bankroll.
