ANALYSIS

Frankie Edgar vs Chris Gutierrez Prediction, Pick, Odds: Tail This Expert's UFC 281 Main Card Best Bet

It's with a heavy heart that I bring you the bantamweight clash between Frankie "All Gas No Breaks" Edgar and Chris "El Fayo" Gutierrez. As many of you know, this is Mr. Frankie's farewell bout, as the legend well and truly believes he has nothing left to offer the wacky world of Mixed Martial Arts. While he can always be a part of the UFC in some capacity through broadcast media or as a coach, his primetime at the top of the heap in whatever weight class he is fighting at is just about over.

Frankie Edgar vs Chris Gutierrez Prediction

Most logic dictates to fade the old man well on his way out, as he really has no more tricks up his sleeve to upset the younger generation of fighters and is ludicrously damaged out to add insult to injury. If he was facing anyone other than Chris Guitierrez I would be inclined to put the final nail in the coffin myself, but the fact of the matter is that he is facing Chris Gutierrez.

Why the emphasis on this opponent is so prevalent has mainly to do with the very sentiment that we've seen Guitierrez struggle with grapplers in the past, as the likes of Cody Durden (who is a flyweight) was battering the Columbian with relative ease every time the fight hit the ground.

While Edgar is quite literally the opposite of a spring chicken and perhaps not as technically sound as the younger Durden, he is going to come into the bout twice his size and triple the fight experience. Yes, Frankie has been violently murdered inside of the cage during his past two outings, but those were to the likes of Cory Sandhagen and Marlon Vera, the absolute cream of the crop at 135. I would argue that although those two perennial top five superstars KO'd him unconscious, the shots that did him in were radioactive bombs that could have put down a baby rhinoceros if we're being perfectly honest.

Christopher does not throw hellacious flying knees, nor does he implement blockbuster crane kicks up the middle. Instead, the man opts for calf strikes and spinning backfists, mixing in some straight punches to put it all together. I think if Frankie can survive the early to the middle onslaught of Guitierrez, he can start to chain wrestle and spam takedowns like his life depended on it, securing at least a few of those and riding top position for two out of the three rounds.

Because Frankie was gruesomely destroyed in the third round his last time out on pace to winning the decision, I would instead elect to wager on the fight to complete two rounds as I believe the overall historic durability of Frankie combined with Guitierrez not exactly being a knockout artist will lead to safe and easy cash on the over, with if everything goes to plan should go the distance outright at a fairly high clip.
