Tottenham vs. Manchester United Picks
(2u) Tottenham +0.25 @ -123
Friday night soccer comes from North London as Jose Mourinho faces off against his former club as his Spurs side welcome Manchester United. It promises to be an intriguing game, especially with the table dynamics with both sides still hoping of a top 6 and top 4 finish respectively, along with European qualification.
Spurs have dipped below their performances of recent years in what’s been a strange and disjointed season. Now I’m not Jose Mourinho’s biggest fan but we have to remember that Mauricio Pochettino was sacked with Spurs languishing in 14th place. I wouldn’t say the performances have improved significantly under Mou, but they’ve garnered enough results to be respectable, especially with key players being injured.
Spurs welcome Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane back to the starting eleven and that’s a massive boost. Without the duo they’ve lacked a focal point and a serious goal threat at the top of the pitch, the pair have accounted for over 44% of the side's goals this season despite both only starting in two-thirds of the games this campaign. I think they’re a much different side with their star men back involved and they have a fit Stephen Bergwijn and Tanguy N’Dombele too, so options are much more plentiful.
United is expected to have a strong end to the season and I can completely see why. They probably have the most generous remaining schedule of all the top sides and it’s no wonder the money has come for the Red Devils to finish in the top four. Fans will be beside themselves with excitement at the prospect of the superb Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba all being in the same starting line-up. Since Fernandes came in from Sporting Lisbon we’ve seen United's improved results and performance data to match.
I do wonder if they’d be happy with a point here though with it arguably being their toughest remaining fixture. After Friday, they have Sheffield United, Bournemouth, Southampton and West Ham at Old Trafford as well as trips to Norwich, Brighton, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.
Spurs have done their best work at home this season too, winning 8-of-14 games. With that in mind I’m more than happy to take the -123 on the hosts with a +0.25 start on the asian handicap. This bet would see us profit if Spurs avoid defeat with a full stakes win should they take the three points and a half stakes win should it end as a draw.
(1u) Harry Kane to Score First Goal @ +500
I don’t expect a barrage of goals either but I’m keen to be with one man in the goalscorer market and that is the returning Harry Kane. Teammates have told the press of how sharp he’s looked in training and it’s a frightening prospect for the United backline. He always tends to come back from a lay off in scintillating form and I fancy him to be eager to get back on the goalscoring trail.
The England man averages around 3 shots per game and is on penalty duty also, he’s +160 best price to score anytime, which is fine, but I’m willing to chance him to open the scoring and you can find him at +500 to score first. I’m willing to have a one point play on this.
