Maryland vs. Ohio State Prediction
Two teams coming off polar-opposite performances will square off Saturday in Columbus in this Big Ten battle between the Maryland Terrapins and Ohio State Buckeyes. Maryland couldn’t have been worse last week in a blowout 51-14 home loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes.
It was an unmitigated disaster for the Terps and especially for QB Taulia Tagovailoa. He only completed 16 passes for 157 yards and 5 INTs, including a devastating stretch in the 2nd Quarter where he got picked off multiple times, all of them leading to Iowa points.
Maryland also suffered a massive blow to their WR corps with an injury to their top receiver, Dontay Demus, who had to be carted off the field and has been ruled out for the rest of the season. Iowa’s defense is an elite group though and this wasn’t the first time their ball-hawking secondary has won a football game almost by themselves.
It’s important not to overreact too much to this performance by the Maryland offense, even for as dreadful as it was. The Terps managed to be a respectable -0.3 yards per play in the loss which indicates that when they weren’t turning the football over and putting their defense in a bad spot, they weren’t as terrible as the final score would suggest.
The performance by the Terps run defense was the one positive for Maryland as they held Iowa’s excellent ground attack led by Tyler Goodson to just 66 yards on 19 carries. For the entire season, Maryland is yielding only 3.2 yards per carry.
Ohio State got off to a fast start against Rutgers last week and never looked back as the Buckeyes dismantled the Scarlet Knights, 52-13. It was an outstanding game for the offense, which struck quickly and often and was balanced throughout the game.
Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud returned from a one-game absence to go 17-for-23 (74%) with 5 TDs and no INTs. Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, who form maybe the best WR tandem in the country, combined for 190 receiving yards and 3 TD receptions in the win. Not to mention, the ground game was dominant with 208 rushing yards on 37 rush attempts against a Rutgers defense that was playing some solid football this season, previously holding Michigan to 20 points and just 275 total yards. The Ohio State defense also stepped up with one of their best games of the season as they held Rutgers to 4.7 yards per play.
The Ohio State offense is showing signs of revving up the last two games and I think that has a solid chance to continue here against Maryland. The Terps haven’t faced a single quality offensive team yet and the only one close to Ohio State on their schedule so far was West Virginia. In that game, they surrendered 24 points and 277 yards through the air against a QB and passing game that doesn’t compare to what the Buckeyes bring to the table. Ohio State has scored an average of 45 points per game this season and that offense continues to improve by the week.
Ohio State’s defense took a big step forward last week against Rutgers but facing the Maryland offense will be a much greater challenge for them. The Terps have a fairly balanced pass and run attack and the Ohio State secondary is still a unit of concern for them. Maryland is averaging over 300 passing yards per game and even without Dontay Demus, I think they can have some success throwing the football down the field and testing this Ohio State pass defense.
The Over is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings between Maryland and Ohio State and each of the last three head-to-head encounters have reached at least 76 total points scored. I expect more of the same on Saturday and I’ll bet this game over the total.
