Texas A&M vs. Alabama Prediction

Alabama vs. Texas A&M odds

38 ranked teams have lost so far this season, which is the highest upset pace in the entire history of the AP Poll (1936).  In last week’s feature, I thought that the chaos trend would continue, and that Ole Miss would stay within 14.5 points of Alabama.

Well, it turns out that the chaos stayed in September.

In Top 10 matchups, Alabama and UGA flexed by outscoring their opponents 79-21, and at halftime of the Alabama game, it was a combined 65-0 lead by the chalk Top 2.

After a one-score test in the Swamp, Alabama bounced back right into form.  They won a few crucial 4th down battles early in the game, and looked flawless in the first half.

Texas A&M has been a major disappointment after their AP Preseason Top 10 ranking.  5 games in, they already lost twice straight-up, are 0-3 ATS against Power 5 opponents, and look like the worst team in the SEC West.

Head coach Nick Saban calling this a “trap game” is intriguing, but I’m avoiding his reverse ‘rat poison.’

Prediction: Alabama 41, Texas A&M 17

Pick: Alabama -18  @ -110

Baylor vs. West Virginia Prediction

Baylor vs. West Virginia odds

Way back in Pick Six Previews’ 2020 season preview book, I forecasted that in Dave Aranda’s second year in Waco, Baylor’s defense would be one of the best defenses in the league.  His scheme is very complex, and his initial 2020 defensive roster was young, setting up for a second-year bonus in 2021.

Well, here we are and that future call has come to fruition.  They are in the Top 3 in the Big 12, and the Top 25 nationally in yards/play.

While West Virginia brings a stout defense themselves, the bigger variance is on the offensive side of the ball.  Jarrett Doege has failed to make the progressions you’d expect from a multi-year starting quarterback, while Baylor quarterback Gerry Bohanon is still a perfect 7-0 TD/INT.

Baylor has the more explosive skill players, and Trestan Ebner is a game-changer in the return game.  Look for a tight game, but for Baylor to hit on a few more chunk plays than West Virginia.  In the Big 12, Baylor is 3rd in explosive 30+ yard plays, while West Virginia is 9th of 10.  Baylor will win the turnover margin and force Doege into mistakes.

Prediction: Baylor 23,  West Virginia 17

Pick: Baylor -2.5  @ -110

Ohio State vs. Maryland Prediction

Ohio State vs. Maryland odds

It turns out, new Ohio State starting quarterback CJ Stroud was battling shoulder issues early in the season.  It was a new starter after a perfect lineage of Braxton Miller, JT Barrett, Dwayne Haskins, and Justin Fields.

Even through the transition, and the injury, Ohio State leads the entire nation in yards per play.  And the shocking part is that they are so far in front (8.6, and next closest teams are 7.2).  TreVeyon Henderson has established himself as one of the best backs in the nation, the offensive line is giving the passer plenty of time to allow All-American candidates Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson (and Jaxon Smith-Njigba) to get open.

The defense was gashed for yards and chunk plays early in the season, but looked strong against a solid Rutgers team.  Remember, Rutgers was within a score of Top 10 Michigan (20-13 final), but was routed by Ohio State (52-13).

Maryland is limping into this one after being dealt another blowout loss in College Park.  At home in the past four seasons, they have an unbelievable three losses by 59+ points.  When they lose the talent advantage, they lose, and lose BIG.

Prediction: Ohio State 48,  Maryland 21

Pick: Ohio State -21  @ -110

Iowa vs. Penn State Prediction

Penn State vs. Iowa odds

If you like throwback football – hard-nosed, physical, low scoring battles – then this Top 5 matchup is for you.  In a #3 vs. #4 October matchup, Iowa brings its elite defense into another national spotlight game.  No other defense in America has created more turnovers over the past five seasons.

In Kinnick Stadium, with the league’s best defense, the nation’s best punter, and a proven coaching staff that knows how to grind out tough wins, Iowa earns a statement victory.

Prediction:  Iowa 20,  Penn State 17

Pick:  Iowa -2  @ -110
