Penn State vs. Arkansas Prediction

The Arkansas Razorbacks will take on the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Outback Bowl on January 1, 2022.

Arkansas put together an incredible season, winning eight of 12 games while finishing the regular season, ranked 21st in the nation. Now they’ll look to bring home a bowl win to finish off the impressive season.

Meanwhile, Penn State went 7-5 on the season and arguably underachieved this season. A bowl win against Arkansas would help make Penn State’s season a bit brighter.

Here are our picks and predictions for the Outback Bowl between the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Penn State vs Arkansas Prediction

This season, the Penn State Nittany Lions were supposed to be a bit better. Instead, the Nittany Lions finished with a 7-5 record in the regular season while scoring just 26.1 points per game.

The Nittany Lions stayed in games due to their defense, as the defense held opponents to just 16.8 points per game on 344 yards per game. The secondary was terrific but the run game had its struggles.

Penn State allowed 135.7 yards per game on the ground while only allowing 208.3 yards per game in the air.

Arkansas averaged over 440 yards per game while rushing for over 217 yards per game. For Penn State, stopping an SEC offense like Arkansas’ is going to be extremely difficult.

The Razorbacks are led by K.J. Jefferson who threw for 21 touchdowns and just three interceptions on the season. Jefferson is built like a tight end and can run like a running back on top of his throwing ability.

Arkansas put together a solid offensive line that has given Jefferson more than enough time in the pocket to make plays. In the run game, the offensive line is even better and as a result, the Razorbacks have averaged well beyond 200 yards per game on the ground, as mentioned.

On the other hand, Penn State’s offensive line has struggled in the passing game and has been about average in the run game. The Nittany Lions don’t have the offense that Arkansas has but with Sean Clifford under center, Penn State is comfortable.

I will say, towards the end of the year, Clifford wasn’t really the same after enduring some injuries. On top of that, the Nittany Lions only averaged 106.4 yards per game on the ground. If Clifford isn’t on his game, the Penn State offense is just average at best.

Therefore, I’ll ride with the Arkansas Razorbacks here. The offense found a way to score 35 points against Alabama earlier this year. I don’t think Arkansas will have a problem with Penn State offensively.
