Clemson vs. Iowa State Prediction

It is time for the Cheez-It Bowl as the Clemson Tigers battle against the Iowa State Cyclones in a power-conference affair.

The Tigers enter their final game of the college football season, playing to the tune of a 7-3 overall record. They saw themselves have a somewhat disappointing season as they came into the year ranked as a top-five team and finished with 3 losses.

Dabo Swinney saw his former quarterback Trevor Lawrence leave for the NFL draft and turned to the services of the highly-recruited DJ Uiagalelei. Uiagalelei was not as good as expected, especially early in the season, but the Tigers remain optimistic about their signal-caller moving forward.

The Tigers look to close their season strong with eight wins and some hardware to take back to Death Valley.

The Cyclones also came into this season with higher expectations than the Cheez-It Bowl. Matt Campbell has a very talented and experienced roster, led by quarterback Brock Purdy and star running back Breece Hall. The Cyclones could not do much this season, playing to a record of 7-5 overall. Star running back Breece Hall has opted out of this bowl game, which will be a huge loss for them today in this game against a great Clemson defense.

The play I am turning to in this game is to back the favorite in the Clemson Tigers. I typically try to avoid the big public favorite, but I see no reason to back Iowa State in this football game.

I give the advantage to Clemson on all three sides of the football. The absence of Hall will be a massive advantage for this Clemson defense as I do not believe Iowa State has enough weapons on the offensive side of the ball to win this game.

DJ Uiagalelei will step it up in this game on the national stage, looking to prove he is still a star quarterback in the college football game. This Clemson defense has been dominant all season, especially against the run. Clemson ranked number eight in the nation against the run and with the absence of Hall, Iowa State will have to throw the ball often to win. Unfortunately for them, this is not an offense suited to throw the football a lot.

I understand Brock Purdy has shown flashes of being great at times, and he is a solid quarterback. However, I think the lack of run game will make this Cyclone offense very predictable tonight. This type of game allows the Tigers' pass rushers to pin their ears back and rush the passer for the majority of the game without the threat of the run.

The Tigers will have to be efficient on the offensive side of things and look to control the pace and win the turnover battle. The game script I see includes a lot of running and ball control early that will eventually open up the passing game for DJ Uiagalelei as the game goes on. I trust that Dabo Swinney will have a great game plan for this one and limit this Iowa State offense all night long. I will ride with the short favorite in this game tonight!
