New Mexico State vs. Nevada Prediction
Nevada vs. New Mexico State will be the matchup I want to get into. Nevada has been extremely successful over the last decade, going to a bowl game six times since 2014. A big part of that success was head coach Jay Norvell. Norvell left the program to become the head coach of the University of Colorado.
The new head coach is Ken Wilson. Wilson knows this program extremely well, being an assistant coach for years. He will look to continue the success of the program this year. This is a much different roster than last year, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Carson Strong will no longer be under center, and their best playmakers in, Romeo Doubs and Cole Turner, are no longer on the team.
The Wolfpack will hand the keys to Nate Cox. Cox is a senior but has limited experience throwing just forty-five passes in his career. He will be responsible for the team's success on offense this year. New Mexico State has been one of the worst teams in football over the last three seasons. They are 5-21 over their last three seasons and will look to turn things around this year. This is a team that brought in a lot of transfers hoping that they can help them win games this season.
I am backing the team total to go under for Nevada today. This number is far too high in my mind, and we need to take advantage of it. The team total is 28.5, which is too tall for an offense that has little experience playing together. Their best players from last year are gone, and they will also have a new coach calling their plays. I think their offense will take some time to get going. It is tough to go out there and put up a lot of points in a week zero game.
New Mexico State should play at an extremely slow pace on offense, trying to limit Nevada's possessions which could help us out here as well. I am willing to fade the Nevada offense on this high number today.
