ANALYSIS

Oklahoma State vs Arizona State Prediction, Pick, and Odds: Can Both Offenses Get Hot?

OKLAHOMA STATE vs ARIZONA STATE - WEEK 2 Odds

Moneyline: Oklahoma State -410

Spread: Oklahoma State -11.5 (-110)

Total: 54.5 (-110)

Arizona State cruised to a 40-3 blowout win against Northern Arizona during its opener last weekend. The passing game was not very strong under transfer quarterback Emory Jones but he made up for the pedestrian outing with two rushing touchdowns. Running back Xazavian Valladay transferred from Wyoming this offseason and he looked very good in Week 1, churning out 15 carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns.

Oklahoma State also enjoyed a blowout win of its own against Central Michigan last weekend. The Cowboys, led by quarterback Spencer Sanders, managed to rack up a 51-15 early in the second half. Sanders threw for over 400 yards and four touchdowns, while also adding two rushing touchdowns in an explosive performance. The Chippewas were not much of a defense but their offense held its own after getting into a huge deficit early, scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to wind up losing 58-44. Here are our picks, predictions, and odds for Oklahoma State vs Arizona State.

OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS vs ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS PREDICTION

Arizona State will need to be better with its passing game to have a chance of covering the spread against Oklahoma State. Emory Jones completed 13-18 passes for 152 yards in his debut last weekend but the lack of scoring through the air will be a concern against the Cowboys' strong run defense. Jones was efficient but took what the defense gave him. Oklahoma State has a talented pass rush led by linebacker Mason Cobb, edge rusher Collin Oliver, and a slew of transfer talent to rejuvenate this area of the Cowboys' defense.

Spencer Sanders won first-team All-Big 12 recognition due to his play for Oklahoma State in 2021. Now, the senior quarterback is ready to lead the Cowboys on a run to claim the Big 12 title and seek the school's first berth in the College Football Playoff. Sanders can get it done through the air or using his legs, making him a true dual-threat quarterback with plenty of weapons to rely on in the passing game. Junior running back Dominic Richardson did not get asked to do much against Central Michigan during the blowout win but he still produced nine carries for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Arizona State fumbled three times last week and while only one resulted in a turnover, the Cowboys are too talented to commit these types of miscues. Jones' passing was mostly targeting the intermediate routes that were open due to the coverage Central Michigan deployed rather than making impressive throws in tight coverage. The Sun Devils possess a talented secondary and get tutelage from legendary NFL defensive back, Herm Edwards, so they could pose a challenge to Sanders. At the same time, the Cowboys have a prolific receiving corps and a talented, big-arm quarterback. They can also pivot to running the ball effectively if the Sun Devils' secondary proves to be problematic.

Arizona State could hang around and whittle Oklahoma State's lead down to under 11.5 points, which is why I like the over (54.5) to hit between these two teams in Stillwater on Saturday night.
