Auburn is also 2-0 on the season but has no eye-popping wins. They beat Mercer and San Jose State and struggled a bit against San Jose State despite earning the win at home. Auburn Tigers vs. Penn State Nittany Lions Prediction
The Penn State Nittany Lions have had the bigger test to start the season. The Nittany Lions began the year with a thrilling 35-31 win over a very good Purdue team. Last week, they took care of business against Ohio, 46-10. The Nittany Lions are led by Sean Clifford, who has thrown five touchdowns and just one interception in those two games. The freshman running back Nicholas Singleton has also averaged over 100 yards in each of his first two games. Although the run game has averaged 166 yards per game, the run block hasn't looked all that good. Against Auburn's defensive front, the run game could struggle in the run game. Auburn's defense has allowed just 300 yards per game through two games, but again, their competition hasn't been all that challenging. Still, Auburn has a terrific pass rush and pass coverage and should stifle the run against top teams in the country. On the other hand, Penn State's defense lacked a lot of things when they faced Purdue. The coverage broke down, but the tackling was even worse. Maybe it's the jitters in the first couple of games, but Penn State's missing a lot of tackles. They also don't look that great against the run, despite only allowing 80.5 yards per game on the ground. Don't be fooled. The Auburn offensive line should be able to move Penn State up front and help the run game get going behind Tank Bigsby. Bigsby already has three touchdowns and 198 yards on 29 carries. However, as Auburn's starter, T.J. Finley has thrown three interceptions through two games. Before the game against San Jose State, Robby Ashford was listed as the co-starter with Finley. Eventually, Ashford only threw three passes and one interception while completing one play for one yard. The passing game for Auburn is weak. But I'm still going to believe in Auburn's defensive unit to get some big-time stops. At home, Penn State should struggle to score just as much as Auburn. I'll take the under in this game.
