Marshall vs. Bowling Green Prediction
Marshall is coming off of one of their best wins in school history with a road win over top 10 ranked Notre Dame and now they have to turn right around and go on the road against a very lowly Bowling Green team. Marshall, not surprisingly, is a big favorite in this game and now the public perception of Marshall is higher than ever.
On the flip side, Bowling Green is coming off a very weird game in which they lost a shootout to FCS Eastern Kentucky by a score of 59-57. Bowling Green has a veteran quarterback in Matt McDonald who has actually played extremely well in his first two games and is definitely not to blame for their 0-2 start. He has yet to throw an interception this season and his maturity and newfound ball security are further reasons why I believe Bowling Green can keep this game close.
Marshall put on an incredible defensive performance against Notre Dame, but the offense struggled in the passing game as Texas Tech transfer, Henry Colombi, was only able to throw for 145 yards. Marshall did a lot of their damage on the ground and while I think they will still be able to have success against Bowling Green, this ground and pound strategy can lead to much more time being bled off the clock which is great for Bowling Green from a betting perspective.
An extremely similar spot from last year that parallels the current position that Marshall is in, is when they traveled to Appalachian State last year as 7-point underdogs. Marshall was in control for a majority of that game and never trailed by more than 7 points as they stayed inside the number for all 60 minutes much like against Notre Dame.
Marshall took a 9-point lead into the 4th quarter but would eventually lose straight up by a score of 31-30 but as mentioned earlier, they covered the spread easily and overall played a very solid game. How did they follow that game up? They traveled on the road again but this time to lowly Middle Tennessee State, who is very comparable to this Bowling Green squad.
Marshall was 11-point road favorites against a struggling MTSU squad who was coming off a 42-39 roller coaster loss to Charlotte, much like Bowling Green is coming off a 59-57 roller coaster loss to EKU. MTSU would take an early lead against the Thundering Herd and never looked back as they won the game straight up. Do I expect Bowling Green to win this game straight up? Probably not. But I am absolutely looking to fade Marshall off of their biggest win in years in a road game that appears to be a strong letdown spot for them. With that being said, I am rolling with BOWLING GREEN +17 at -110 for 1.5u as one of my most confident College Football Picks of week 3.
Marshall vs. Bowling Green Pick
Bowling Green +17 (-110) (Bet $110 to win $100)
