North Dakota State vs. Arizona Prediction

North Dakota State has built a dynasty in the FCS over the last 10-20 years. They have produced multiple top-5 draft picks, including star quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Trey Lance, who both led the Bison to National Championships.

This year is no different for the Bison as they are once again a top-5 FCS team in the country. North Dakota State did not start 2022 on a high note though as they allowed Drake, an extremely bottom-tier FCS squad, to march right down the field on their first drive of the game and score the opening touchdown. NDSU was down 7-0 and how did they respond? Since that drive, North Dakota State has only allowed 1 offensive touchdown and has outscored Drake and NCAT by a combined score of 99-10, so I think it is safe to say that they woke up.

Their defense has been one of their strong points for years and it is again one of their biggest strengths this season. They have already forced 5 turnovers in 2 games and haven't allowed a quarterback to throw for more than 67 yards against them. This speaks to how well NDSU plays up front and how much pressure their defensive line is getting on the quarterback. It also speaks to how well their secondary has played to this point, but this will definitely be their biggest test of the season against Arizona. North Dakota State has already notched 6 sacks on the season and there have been a lot of questions about the Arizona offensive and defensive front.

On the other side for Arizona is Washington State transfer Jayden De Laura who is very talented but not the most disciplined passer. He already has 4 interceptions on the season and has 17 in his career. If there is one word to describe North Dakota State on both sides of the ball, it is disciplined. The Bison are a team who are simply not going to beat themselves and nearly always play a clean game while they sit and wait for their opponents to make mistakes.

Another thing I am concerned about with this Arizona team is their inability to stop the run. They allowed San Diego State to run for 170 yards on 4 yards per carry and allowed Mississippi State to run for 115 yards on 5.5 yards per carry. This is even more concerning to me because Mississippi State is an air raid offense that is not even particularly concerned with running the ball and they were still able to have immense success against this Arizona front 7.

North Dakota State runs a pro-style offense that features running plays on every down, and they love to create big plays off the play-action pass after they establish their running game. NDSU is led by junior quarterback Cam Miller, who has been extremely efficient during his tenure as QB1. He has a career completion percentage of 63% and has only thrown 3 interceptions in the last 2 years. He is more of a game manager but is also capable of making plays when called upon.

North Dakota State should be able to establish the run and I foresee their defense being able to stifle Jayden De Laura while forcing Arizona to commit multiple turnovers as well. With that being said, I am rolling with North Dakota State ML at -120 for 1.5u as one of my most confident college football picks of Week 3.
