Utah State has been very bad to this point in the season. No other way around it. They come into this game with a 1-3 record and are currently 0-4 ATS as they have yet to cover a spread so far in 2022. Their only win came against UConn who is also one of the worst FBS teams in the country and even Utah State trailed by 14 in that game before mounting a comeback.

Utah State has a tall test in front of them tonight with a BYU squad whose offense has been firing on all cylinders so far. BYU is currently averaging 459 yards per game. Experienced quarterback Jaren Hall has been putting up some video game-type numbers and has done a great job in the early part of this season.

I do think BYU has some weaknesses however and those weaknesses can be seen on the defensive side of the ball. They allowed a very weak Wyoming team to put up 24 points on them and also allowed a very bad South Florida offense to score 21 on them as well. I know BYU has an explosive offense and can score points in a hurry, so they don't mind playing in shootouts but if there has been one strength on this Utah State team, it has been their passing defense.

Utah State is currently ranked 39th in the country in passing yards allowed per game as they are only allowing 206 yards through the air per contest. Add in the fact that they played Alabama and Bryce Young which would skew that stat even further against them and that stat is even more impressive to me. Utah State is also relatively in the middle of the pack in defensive sack percentage, so they have gotten decent pressure on the quarterback.

The bottom line for me is that the BYU defense has not been impressive enough to me to trust them in order to justify laying nearly 4 touchdowns. I know Utah State has been bad, but Logan Bonner is a very solid and experienced quarterback who I believe will bounce back to keep this game from becoming a laugher. Fairly contrarian and scary play here but I am rolling with UTAH STATE at +24.5 -106 for 1U tonight as I think this game will be closer than most people expect.
