ANALYSIS

Appalachian State vs. Coastal Carolina Prediction, Pick, and Odds: Can Grayson McCall Lead Coastal to a Win?

Two high-performing teams from the Sun Belt conference's East division will collide in Conway, South Carolina during a primetime Week 10 kickoff between Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina. The Mountaineers have been dominant in three of the last four games, scoring at least 42 points and holding teams under 20 points during the three wins in this stretch. The Chanticleers suffered their first season loss back in Week 7 against Old Dominion 49-21, but they did bounce back against Marshall following the Bye Week, winning 24-13 to get back in the win column.

Both teams are very familiar with each other since they compete in the same division. The last time this matchup was held at Coastal Carolina, the Chanticleers won 34-23 back in 2020. The other four recent head-to-head matchups have seen Appalachian State emerge victorious. Neither team's schedule has been demanding, but the Mountaineers are averaging 36.9 points per game, ranking 20th in the nation. Can the Chanticleers capitalize on home-field advantage to improve to 8-1? Here are our picks, predictions, and odds for Thursday's primetime Sun Belt game between the Appalachian State Mountaineers vs. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

Appalachian State vs. Coastal Carolina Prediction

There are relatively few injuries heading into this Week 10 Sun Belt East matchup, which allows both teams to maximize their productivity on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Appalachian State is a top-20 scoring offense this season but they have had to rely on a few big plays at the end of games to maintain a 5-3 record. The Mountaineers' defense is not bad, surrendering 24.1 points per game, but they are still going up against Coastal Carolina's offense, averaging roughly 32 points per game this season.

The Chanticleers' defense is similar to Appalachian State's, allowing 27.2 points per game. If there's one area that Coastal Carolina's defense will cause problems for the Mountaineers, it's stifling the rushing attack. Coastal Carolina's defense was unable to stop the run in one game this season, which resulted in its only loss of the season to Old Dominion. During that loss, the Chanticleers allowed 10.3 YPC and four rushing touchdowns, which was an outlier compared to other outings this season. Only two other teams have averaged over 5.0 YPC, while no one, except for Old Dominion, has more than two rushing touchdowns in a game.

Appalachian State relies on its rushing attack to score points. Led by Camerun Peoples, Daetrich Harrington, and Nate Noel, the Mountaineers have a lot more success sustaining drives and chewing clock with this three-headed backfield. Quarterback Chase Brice has strung together some nice performances this season, but he's also gone under 250 passing yards in four games. When the Mountaineers cannot establish the run, they wind up losing games, as Brice winds up committing turnovers by forcing the ball downfield.

Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall is playing high-caliber football from the pocket during his junior season, completing over 68 percent of his pass attempts for 19 touchdowns and only one interception. McCall has mobility in his arsenal as well, rushing 70 times for four touchdowns on the ground. CJ Beasley has been effective as the lead ball carrier in the Chanticleers' offense, averaging 5.3 YPC, which has allowed wideouts Jared Brown and Sam Pinckney to combine for over 1,200 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns. Tight end transfer Jacob Jenkins is a threat in the red zone, hauling in four touchdowns on nine receptions.

Appalachian State has been shutting down opposing passing attacks in their last two games, but will they be able to sustain this lock-down coverage against McCall and company on the road in primetime? Four opponents have thrown for over 200 yards against the Mountaineers, including two 300-yard outings, so it can be accomplished. Forcing turnovers is a specialty, but Coastal Carolina has only committed one turnover on offense in its last three games.

Based on the current state of these two Sun Belt East programs, I like Coastal Carolina to win outright as a home underdog under the bright lights on Thursday night.
