North Texas Mean Green will travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on the University of Texas San Antonio Road Runners on Friday night. NCAAF handicapper Matt MacKay is here with his prediction.

UTSA vs. North Texas Prediction, Pick, Odds: Will North Texas Take the Conference USA Championship Title?

Two C-USA teams from Texas will meet for a chance to win and earn the title of 2022 Conference USA champion on Friday night in San Antonio, Texas. The North Texas Mean Green are led by seventh-year head coach Seth Littrell, who is one game over .500 during his tenure. The Mean Green have seven wins entering Friday's C-USA Championship game, which is the most under Littrell since a 9-4 season back in 2018. North Texas is 3-1 straight up in its last four games played, relying on a strong pass attack led by junior quarterback Austine Aune.

The University of Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) Roadrunners are led by third-year head coach Jeff Traylor, who has led the Roadrunners to bowl games in each of his first two seasons, including a third this year since UTSA is currently 10-2 ahead of Friday's Conference USA Championship game. The Roadrunners are averaging 37.9 points per game this season, led by senior quarterback Frank Harris. He has roughly a 4:1 touchdown to interception ratio with a 69.6 percent completion rate, while also serving as the Roadrunners' RB2, racking up 5.2 YPC and eight rushing touchdowns.

These two teams already met a month ago during conference play, resulting in a 31-27 win at home for UTSA. Can North Texas build off of their win over Rice in Week 13 to attempt to beat the Roadrunners at home? Or will UTSA's offense be too much for North Texas to handle? Here are our picks, predictions, and odds for Friday night's C-USA Championship game between the North Texas Mean Green vs. UTSA Roadrunners.

UTSA vs. North Texas Prediction

Let's start with North Texas. The Mean Green are eight-point underdogs on the road in San Antonio on Friday night, which feels like the right number. Austin Aune has been playing good football, throwing 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this season, but he lacks mobility, constraining the Mean Green offense in comparison to UTSA. The offense shouldn't be responsible for the bulk of the blame though, as North Texas' defense is ranked 102nd out of 131 Division I FBS programs. They are allowing over 30 points per game, which forces Aune and the rest of the offense to play fast-paced with little margin for error.

The Mean Green have a strong passing attack, finishing with over 300 passing yards in three of its past five games. However, these numbers have dried up recently, with Aune logging less than 210 passing yards and two or fewer touchdowns through the air against Alabama-Birmingham and Rice. Fortunately, the rushing attack is sustainable, as the Mean Green are averaging 5.0 YPC in three of its past four games played, resulting in three wins and zero losses. This needs to be the formula against UTSA, which just allowed UTEP to rack up over 250 rushing yards and two touchdowns in Week 13.

UTSA greatly benefits from the dual-threat ability Frank Clark provides under center. He is averaging a 67.4 percent completion rate this season, limiting turnovers and maximizing chunk plays. Clark threw for nearly 400 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-31 win against UTEP, so it will be interesting to see how he fares against North Texas' pass defense. In the first matchup, Clark was efficient but limited in terms of his passing statistics, finishing with 238 yards and two touchdowns. Traylor ended up pivoting to a run-centric attack, which worked out nicely, resulting in 54 carries for 257 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Harris threw the game-winning touchdown to De'Corian Clark for a 10-yard reception in the final seconds during the first matchup between these two C-USA competitors. North Texas is an eight-point underdog on the road this time. They are 7-5 ATS this season and 4-2 ATS on the road, meaning they are a profitable team to bet on. The Roadrunners are 10-2 overall but only 6-6 ATS this year, winning some tight games. UTSA is getting eight points at home, where they have only managed to cover the spread twice in six games.

Three of UTSA's last five wins have been won by less than eight points, suggesting that North Texas could be the play on Friday night. Considering how familiar these teams are with each other, plus how close UTSA came to losing at home against UTEP last weekend, I like taking the Mean Green at +8, which also contains a bit more value at -105 odds.
