It’s early days, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t early value on these NFL divisional futures! Here’s my breakdown and pick for this year’s AFC East Winner:
New England Patriots @-500
New York Jets @+700
Buffalo Bills @+1200
Miami Dolphins @+5000
The Pats have won the AFC East for the past ten seasons consecutively, with a further four out of five titles prior to that. It’s because of this unparalleled dominance that they enter each season as the division’s standout favorites.
Brady and Belichick are still going strong at the helm, having won last year’s Super Bowl, but with the absence of Gronk, and not many year-on-year improvements to their depth chart, it does make you question how long it will be before ‘the wheels fall off’.
The Jets are entering this season with a little bit of fanfare about their chances. Their young QB now has a year of experience in the NFL and he has the support of an ever improving team around him.
The Bills could be likened to that of the Jets, with Josh Allen offering hope and excitement, and a somewhat transformed team that were being touted for a potentially winless season only a year ago.
Miami should be disregarded from this discussion. All due respect to them, but when your team is in the running for ‘worst in the NFL’, there isn’t much hope for a divisional title. I will say that I like their calculated punt on Rosen, and Fitzmagic will have a role in their offense, but even at +5000, they should be a hard pass.
My pick to win this year’s AFC East will be the Jets. I’m not one to advocate betting against New England, but given that this season looks to be their most likely year to collapse, I like taking a small stab on New York. At +700 they only have to win their division 12.5% of the time, and with a promising offense and solid defense, they hold decent value to break the Pats’ streak.
