MNF Texans @ Saints: Picks & Preview
The Saints and Texans will kick off Monday Night Football in Week 1 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
For a second straight year, the Saints were eliminated from the postseason in heartbreaking fashion.
After a non-call following a clear defensive pass interference that would have potentially set up the Saints to score the go-ahead touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams, the game shifted to overtime and quarterback Drew Brees threw an interception, which led to a Rams game-winning field goal and a Super Bowl berth.
That was a year after Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs came down with a Hail Mary and scored the game-winning touchdown as time expired to lead Minnesota to an NFC Divisional Round victory over the Saints.
So, is this the season New Orleans gets over the hump and back into the Super Bowl for the first time since 2009?
Well, for the Saints to get there, they will need to get off to a better start when they host the Houston Texans.
In the first game of the season last year, the Saints fell at home 48-40 to the Ryan Fitzpatrick-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a huge upset.
For New Orleans to avoid another surprise home defeat, it will need to play better defense and run the ball more effectively. New Orleans only had 43 rushing yards on 13 carries in that contest, and on defense, the Saints allowed over 500 yards of total offense to Tampa Bay.
The Saints will have their work cut out for them when Deshaun Watson and the high-powered Texans offense comes to town.
The Texans were another team which started off cold in 2018. Houston began the season 0-3 with losses to the New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans and New York Giants, but the Texans rebounded and won nine games in a row before eventually winning the AFC South.
The New Orleans Saints are giving the Texans seven points in this Monday Night Football game.
I expect a high-scoring game between these two offenses which feature a ton of talent at the wide receiver and running back positions.
The Texans will give New Orleans a great game, but Brees and the boys will find a way to win on their home turf.
I like the Texans and the points in this game, but the Saints will come away victorious.
The over/under in this one is set at 52.5 total points.
I expect a close game on Monday night between these two playoff teams from a year ago.
Expect the Texans to once again compete this season in a wide-open AFC South division, now that former Colts quarterback Andrew Luck retired from football.
The Saints are loaded once again and for them to get over the hump and into the Super Bowl, hopefully luck will be on their side in 2019-20.
Take the over in this high-flying football game.
If you’re thinking about taking the Texans to win outright, a $100 bet will get you winnings of $260.
If you want to take the favorites in New Orleans, you’d have to put out $310 to win $100.
