Top Thursday Night Football Player Props to Bet: Washington Football Team vs. New York Giants
As a Giants fan, all the excitement and optimism I had for the 2021 NFL season was sucked out of me after the Giants Week 1 loss at home to the Denver Broncos. Granted those expectations were tempered given the Giants haven't provided much to be optimistic about the last five seasons. Literally, since 2016 and the infamous picture of multiple Giants players on a yacht in Miami prior to their playoff matchup in Green Bay, there has been nothing to be excited about.
It's only one week though! The good news is we had a profitable Week 1 of the NFL season with our player props across the board and we're back hunting for more Week 2. Starting with the Thursday night game between my dreadful Giants and the Washington Football Team.
Some big news came out of Washington this past Sunday that their starting Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick would miss the next 6-8 weeks after suffering a right hip subluxation in the Week 1 loss to the Chargers. With Fitzpatrick out of the mix, Taylor Heinicke will step in as the Football Team's new starting quarterback beginning with Thursday's game against the Giants, while Kyle Allen moves up to the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.
With all the information and a short week before this game with injury news, we have to make these decisions wisely. For this game, we're only going with two bets. With a point total hovering around 40 points currently, we're not expecting much offense. So let's get to the top player props for the game!
Taylor Heinicke Rushing Yards Over 21.5 (-110)
Heinicke has two career NFL starts on his resume. One thing he has caught praise for has been his ability to create when the defense doesn't give much. His mobility is something that most people don't know about him. Going back to the 2020 divisional round playoff game against the vaunted Tampa defense, he rushed 6 times for 46 yards and a touchdown. Last week when he entered the game late in the second quarter he still managed to rush for 17 yards on 3 carries. The Giants allowed Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to scamper for 19 yards in Week 1. Scott Turner the Offensive Coordinator runs a motion-heavy offense, I expect to see more rollouts and plays to get Heinicke outside the tackles to take advantage of his mobility. He should hit this total and then some.
Terry McLaurin Over 5.5 Catches (-122)
I'm just picking on my Giants here. McLaurin had 7 receptions in both games in 2020 facing the Giants. In Week 1 Heinicke targeted him 4 times catching all for 62 yards. So in basically one half of football Scary Terry almost hit this number. The Giants cover big-bodied outside receivers well, mostly because of the work of lockdown Cornerback James Bradberry. Terry though will take advantage of the short area throws and that is Heinicke's bread and butter. In the aforementioned game against the Bucs, 88.6% of his 40 passes were less than 20 yards. So I expect to see Washington try to run the ball and work the short, middle-of-the-field throws. This is to the benefit of Terry McLaurin and we should see him soarin over this total Thursday night.
