Houston is without starting QB Tyrod Taylor. What can we expect from rookie Davis Mills? Brian Good gives us his Thursday Night Football Same Game Parlay picks

Panthers vs. Texans Same Game Parlay Picks: Fade The Injured Texans

Another week of Thursday Night Football means I’m kicking another week off with my Same Game Parlay picks. Last week, two terrible offenses (New York and Washington) managed to score almost 60 points, so we were dead in the water early, but this week’s Same Game Parlay pick comes to us from the Carolina Panthers vs. Houston Texans game.

If both teams were healthy, I think we’d be in for a pretty good game. Unfortunately, Houston is starting backup rookie QB Davis Mills. One of my favorite ways to bet NFL games is the Same Game Parlay, so I’ve decided to break down a Panthers vs. Texans Same Game Parlay Thursday Night Football.

3-Leg Same Game Parlay @ +518 - $50 wager wins $259.44

Same Game Parlay Leg 1: Davis Mills under 220.5 passing yards @ -114

I’m not sure how anyone could watch last week’s loss to the Browns and sit here and tell me they think Davis Mills is going to throw for over 220 yards. In a relief appearance for injured starter Tyrod Taylor, Mills completed eight of 18 passes for 102 yards with one TD and one INT. Granted, coming in cold off the bench is a tough situation, made even tougher as a rookie, but it doesn’t exactly instill confidence.

I love this under for a couple of reasons. First, that Carolina defensive front is very good. Having an inexperienced QB under center has the potential to be disastrous against a line that can get after the QB like that. Brian Burns and Hasson Reddick are going to pin their ears back on obvious passing downs and get after Mills.

I also think that the Texans know this. They aren’t going to want to put him in a ton of obvious passing downs or have him throw the ball a ton. They have a talented stable of RBs and I expect them to lean on that to keep this game close.

Last week, Jameis Winston, fresh off his incredible Week 1 performance, looked awful against this Carolina defense. I’m banking on Davis Mills to look even worse on Thursday Night Football.

Same Game Parlay Leg 2: Christian McCaffrey over 50.5 receiving yards @ -114

Why is this total so low? I’m not entirely sure, but you can be positive that I’m jumping all over it.

For starters, Christian McCaffrey has gone over this number in both Week 1 and Week 2. McCaffrey is less of a running back than he is a true combo back. They use him a lot in the run game, but he’s even more valuable as a receiver out of the backfield.

Sam Darnold has come in and immediately relied on McCaffrey as a receiver, as he should. In two games, McCaffrey is second on the team in targets, with 15. He has 14 catches for 154 yards and while he hasn’t scored as a receiver yet, that will likely end come Thursday.

McCaffrey to go over 50 yards receiving seems like a no-brainer to add to this Thursday Night Football Same Game Parlay for Week 3.

Same Game Parlay Leg 3: Carolina Panthers -7.5 @ -118

I actually hate betting against the Texans at this big of a number. Houston has looked good the first two weeks of the season. As a matter of fact, they’ve exceeded most expectations. They dominated Jacksonville in Week 1 and hung around with a Cleveland team that is expected to compete for a Super Bowl, until Tyrod Taylor went down.

That’s the thing, without Tyrod Taylor I don’t think this Houston offense is going to be able to move the ball much at all. Can you really expect Davis Mills, suiting up for his third ever NFL football game, to hang around with Carolina?

The Panthers looked okay in Week 1, beating the Jets, but they really took it to NFC South foe New Orleans last week. Matt Rhule has this team looking like they could challenge for a playoff spot this season. Something like a 27-10 win for Carolina doesn’t seem too far off.
