NFL Week 5 Picks: Atlanta Falcons vs. New York Jets Predictions
The New York Jets finally got in the win column after upsetting the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. They won in overtime thanks in large part to the second-half performance of Zach Wilson who was tremendous throwing for two touchdown passes and 232 yards.
As for Atlanta, they weren’t as lucky. They lost another high-scoring affair 34-30 to the Washington Football Team in a back and forth contest. For the third time this season, the Falcons defense allowed 30+ points in a game and for the second time, they allowed over 400 yards of offense.
Both of these teams head to London, England sitting at 1-3. Who prevails between the New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons?
Atlanta Falcons vs. New York Jets Predictions
On the offensive side of the ball, Atlanta has been hard to figure out. In two of their four games they combined for 55 points and in the other two they combined for 23. Talk about a big difference. It’s also been a bit of a rocky performance for Matt Ryan so far in 2021.
He hasn’t eclipsed 7 yards per attempt in any of the four games this year and has thrown for 250 yards or more in a game just twice. For reference, he’s averaged 285 yards per game or more in a season for each of the last three previous seasons. Don’t get me started on the ground game, it’s been really bad for Atlanta. Mike Davis is averaging 3.1 yards per carry so they are now featuring Cordarrelle Patterson in more of a lead role.
Defensively, it’s been even worse. They’ve given up the most points against and are 23rd in the league in yards allowed. Specifically, against the pass, they’ve struggled already allowing 11 passing touchdowns against which is the third-most in the league.
For the Jets, they finally figured it out on offense a little bit against a beat-up Tennessee team. After sporting six points over an eight-quarter span, they sprung for 27 in their win over the Titans which was the best showing Zach Wilson has had to date.
Plus, the Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich defense has been really good. They had a seven-sack performance in Week 4 and they have a pretty much no-name secondary competing way above their heads right now.
There’s no reason to think that the Jets' offense can’t build off of last week, especially considering that rookie wide receiver Elijah Moore should be returning from injury. On a neutral site field, I don’t understand how the Falcons are favored by three points over anybody, even the Jets.
Complete Odds for Jets vs Falcons
Both of these teams are 1-3 against the spread this year, and are normally teams I would stay away from when placing wagers. But based on what we saw from Zach Wilson this past week and the lousy product the Falcons have been putting out on defense, I don’t know how we don’t see points and a lot of them for the Jets.
Yes, it sounds crazy to say that I like not only the Jets to cover and win but also the over in this game. 46 points feels like free money with this Falcons defense that gives up points like it’s going out of style.
