Philadelphia Eagles vs. Carolina Panthers Prediction, Picks and Odds
The Philadelphia Eagles, off to a 1-3 start this season, travel to Carolina to take on the 3-1 Panthers in an NFC showdown. The Eagles are bad, but that was expected this season. One of the surprises has been how good, or at least competent, the Panthers look on both offense and defense.
Eagles vs. Panthers predictions are some of the hardest to make in Week 5. Any Eagles vs. Panthers pick has to take into account that the Eagles, while showing some promise, are one of the worst teams against the spread in the entire NFL. Another thing all Eagles vs. Panthers predictions have to acknowledge is that while Carolina has been good, they’ve had it relatively easy to this point.
So, let’s take a look at Eagles vs. Panthers picks for Week 5 in the NFL.
Philadelphia Eagles vs. Carolina Panthers Predictions
Let’s start these Eagles vs. Panthers predictions off with some of the things that the Eagles do well, which is hard to find on a team that comes into the week sporting a 1-3 record.
For starters, Devonta Smith is the real deal. Just ask the Chiefs, who couldn’t keep up with the former Alabama WR and gave up seven catches for 122 yards to the last year’s Heisman Trophy winner. I would love to see Jalen Hurts rely even more on Smith as the season goes on, which I think will come with time.
Another positive has to be Jalen Hurts. Hurts hasn’t been perfect and has his own shortcomings, mainly his arm strength, but he has been good at executing the offense and making smart decisions, both with his arm and legs. The Eagles didn’t punt a single time last week, the issue was neither did the Chiefs.
That’s about all the positives you can give the Eagles right now. Their QB looks promising and their first-round pick from this past year looks poised to be a top player at his position. But, what has gone wrong?
For starters, on offense they can’t figure out what role Miles Sanders is supposed to play on this team. Sanders is explosive but Kenneth Gainwell has eaten into this receiving opportunities and Nick Sirianni doesn’t look like he’ll be committing to the run any time soon. The Eagles are also the most penalized team in football and had three TDs taken off the board thanks to penalties last week.
Still, the biggest issue in Philadelphia comes on the defensive end. Their linebackers are non-existent, their secondary stinks and the Philadelphia front, which was supposed to be its strength on defense, is basically just Javon Hargrave and three bums every snap.
What about Carolina? The main reason my Eagles vs. Panthers prediction is calling for the Eagles to look flat on Sunday has little do with Philadelphia and more to do with Darnold and the Panthers.
Sam Darnold is the poster child for situation being the No. 1 factor when it comes to QB success in the NFL. In New York, he plays under Adam Gase and quite literally was seeing ghosts. He comes to Carolina and gets a competent head coach in Matt Rhule and a top-tier offensive coordinator in Joe Brady and look, he’s living up to the hype.
This past week against the Cowboys was a hiccup for Carolina. But, how in the world is this terrible Philadelphia defense going to keep Carolina off the board? Forget the fact that Robby Anderson and DJ Moore have become one of the best WR duos in the NFL for a second, but Christian McCaffrey also just returned to practice this week and looks like he may play.
The Eagles are 1-3 against the spread this season, including a 0-3 mark in their last three games. Meanwhile. Carolina’s loss to Dallas last week was their first ATS blemish.
Offensively, I think the Eagles can hang with the Panthers thanks to Hurts’ ability to make plays no matter what. But, this Eagles defense is going to struggle yet again this week. Expect DJ Moore to have one of the best games of his career, literally, and the Eagles to lose by 6-10 points in Carolina.
