Brandon Staley and Bill Belichick are like polar opposites. I think that’s why I like Staley so much. He gives genuine thoughtful answers to the media and treats the public/fans as people with a brain, he doesn’t dumb it down for them as Bill does. They’re just entirely different people, which is fine, Belichick has the luxury to coach as he sees fit with his Super Bowl rings as collateral.

On the field, they’re top half in the league in both points and yards with one of the more prolific young quarterbacks in the game in Justin Herbert. Herbert has 14 touchdowns to just four interceptions on the year and he’s averaging 296.3 yards per game. There’s not a throw on the field that he can’t make and Staley’s team is reaping the benefits because of that.
The Chargers have been okay defensively, as they’re ranked 16th in the league overall. Where they thrive is hurry percentage, as they’re top-10 with a rate of 12.7 percent. They have the defense to get after the quarterback which could make Mac Jones’ day difficult.
Last week, he could’ve sat in a lawn chair and played quarterback against the Jets. Jones eclipsed 300 yards for the first time in his career and he had two touchdowns passing on the day. He was sacked just one time.
New England’s defense has been impressive as they’ve allowed the sixth-fewest points against in the NFL this year. In fact, when these two teams played last year, it was arguably Justin Herbert’s worst game as a pro. He completed a career-low of just 49.1 percent of his passes and he was picked off twice. Can New England do it to him twice?
In seven games this year, New England is 3-4 against the spread with a +3.1 ATS +/-. The Chargers hold a 4-2 record against the spread despite having just a +0.2 ATS +/- on the season. Sure, the Patriots defense has looked good but consider they’ve had two games against the Jets, and games against the Texans and Dolphins as well. Against Dallas and New Orleans, teams with quarterbacks who can semi-function in the NFL, they were gashed.
It’s time for some Justin Herbert revenge, I like the home team -5.5.
