Week 8 NFL Expert Picks: Detroit Lions vs. Philadelphia Eagles Prediction

I can’t believe we’re looking at Detroit Lions vs. Philadelphia Eagles odds. What a barn burner we have in store for ourselves this weekend as the winless Lions take on maybe the only team in the NFL playing worse than them at the moment, the Philadelphia Eagles. If you’re going to watch this game, make sure you don’t have anything to do for the rest of the day because it will likely put you right to sleep.

But, just because both teams suck doesn’t mean there isn’t money to be made on the game. I have a few Lions vs. Eagles predictions and picks that I’m pretty confident in this week. I’ve watched enough of both these teams, but especially the Eagles, to be confident that I know what to expect come Sunday.

I just want to get this out of the way. The Philadelphia Eagles deserve to be road favorites against no one. There is not a single team that I would pick them to beat on the road, and that goes for Detroit as well.

Let’s start with the Eagles’ defense. The NFL record for completion percentage in a season is 74.4%, set by Drew Brees. The Philadelphia Eagles defense is allowing a 74.4% completion percentage this season by themselves.

Last week, Derek Carr completed 31 of 34 passes for the second-highest completion percentage for a QB in a game where they attempt at least 30 passes.

They cannot, under any circumstance, get off the field. Oh, Jared Goff is struggling? Don’t worry, this week he’ll look like prime Joe Montana.

How about the Eagles’ offense? Must be pretty good if they have two wins this season with a defense like that. Wrong.

Here is my weekly praise for Devonta Smith. Nothing I’m about to say about the offense includes him. Smith has proven he is very good, and in a real offense with a good QB, he’s be putting up big-time numbers. He will likely still break 1,000 yards on the season, which is remarkable considering everything is happening around him.

Jalen Hurts, in his last two starts, has been atrocious. Last week he finished with 236 yards passing. If I had to guess, 50% of that came in garbage time with the team down 17 points.

Hurts has shown no ability to read a defense. He lacks the timing needed to hit on deep balls and he is constantly misreading coverage and/or zone reads. Hurts hasn’t completed more than 60% of his passes in three weeks, which is saying something because he only throws the ball down the field like once a quarter.

Some of this, and probably most of this, has to go on Sirianni. The first-year head coach looks like he is in way over his head. But, Hurts is playing poorly and as a result, so is everyone around him.

Meanwhile, even though the Lions are winless, they’re playing teams tough. Last week, they almost took down the 6-1 Rams. They are a team that plays tough each week and looks to be improving.

Now, there is a reason they don’t have a win yet. The offense has struggled to find a rhythm with Goff under center and the defense is hardly reliable.

But, as we covered earlier, the Eagles can’t stop the pass, so expect Goff to look like a Pro Bowler on Sunday.

I have two plays for this Sunday’s Eagles vs. Lions game. I’m hammering the Lions +3.5 and I’m sprinkling them on the moneyline as well at +162.
