Kansas City Chiefs vs New York GIants Preview

A week after getting ran out of Tennessee, the Chiefs return home to host the Giants in a get-right spot. Kansas City sits at an uncharacteristic 3-4 record, but all four losses came against AFC contenders who enter Week 8 either 4-2 or 5-2. That’s perhaps little consolation for Chiefs fans, but it’s an important note nonetheless. While the Chiefs may not be playing to their full potential, it’s not like they are losing to also-rans.

The 2-5 Giants look like an also-ran. Banged up with Saquon Barkley and Kenny Golladay out plus Sterling Shepard and Kadarius Toney listed as questionable, New York will try to build off an impressive 25-3 win last week over Carolina at home. Kansas City’s defense is legitimately troublesome — they rank 30th in success rate against the pass and 31st against the run, per Sharp Football Stats — and that should help Daniel Jones and his patchwork group of skill position players put up some points. If Shepard and Toney can go, they’ll join Darius Slayton and Evan Engram to make for a reasonably solid set of pass-catchers, all things considered.

But the bigger story is on the other side. Patrick Mahomes is coming off one of his worst career performances, a 206-yard, zero-touchdown clunker where he threw an interception, fumbled twice, and took a beating. Mahomes returns home to face a defense that’s been pretty average, which is maybe better than one might immediately expect out of the 2-5 Giants. Over the past five weeks, Mahomes has posted three of the four lowest single-game adjusted yards per attempt (AY/A) figures of his career. On paper, you could make a claim the 10-point line is too large here for a struggling offense with a defense that can’t stop anybody.

But this is one of those games I’m just going with the narrative. New York is not a good enough team to stop a motivated Kansas City offense, and the Chiefs know they need to make a statement on primetime in front of their hometown fans. Rumors of Kansas City’s demise have been exaggerated; they’ve struggled with the defenses they’ve faced this year as teams have sat back in two-high safety looks and tried to take away the explosive plays, but stopping the Chiefs isn’t that simple, and this run of poor play isn’t indicative of what they actually are.

Expect Kansas City to finally look right for the first time in a while, at least on offense. If they can get the Giants into obvious passing situations, there are always turnover opportunities with Jones. Call it blind faith, call it square, but I'm expecting Mahomes to play a fantastic game and the Chiefs to win this one handily.
