Super Bowl LVI: Best Alternate Total Plays
With multiple sportsbooks popping up in over 20 states over the last few years, there have never been more ways to wager on a football game, especially the Super Bowl. With so many options, it's difficult to sort through the noise and find the value without focusing on one category at a time.
Let's take a closer look at one such option available to bettors.

Super Bowl LVI: Best Alternate Total Plays
What is an Alternate Total?
Starting with the posted total (O/U), an alternate total is for every half-point below and above the regular game total, typically about 15 points in each direction. The odds of course change depending on how high (or low) the alternate point total is, with it becoming more costly the higher the total for betting the under and vice versa for the over.
As an example, while the regular total for Sunday's game is 48.5 (-110), the alternate total of 60 is -550 to the under, and +360 to the over.

Super Bowl 2022 Alternate Total Pick
- PICK: Over 55 @ +190 (Bet $100 to win $190)
Outside of a 13-3 Patriots win over the Rams in 2019, Super Bowls as of late have generally been high-scoring affairs. In fact, three of the last give have eclipsed the 50-point mark and few have featured offenses as explosive as these two.
With two weeks to prepare I expect some of the best young offensive coaches in this league to have strong game plans that produce a lot of points. Add in these two teams are averaging 26 points per game in this season's postseason, and I like more of the same in this one and think there's some value in an alternate total that's just a touchdown higher than the regular total.
