ANALYSIS

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Detroit Lions Prediction, Pick: Can Mike Tomlin, Steelers Be Perfect This Preseason?

The NFL preseason will come to a close tonight as the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Detroit Lions. It's been a fun August of preseason betting, but this means the regular season is just around the corner. The Steelers enter this game as six-point favorites and are expected to knock off the rebuilding Lions. Who should you back in the last game of the 2022 NFL preseason? Let's take a look at my prediction, pick, and odds for the Steelers vs Lions.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Detroit Lions Prediction

The Pittsburgh Steelers are always an entertaining team to watch in the preseason because Mike Tomlin historically puts effort into every preseason game. He has a 36-24 record in preseason games because of his focus on taking the preseason seriously to prepare his teams for the upcoming season. Tomlin is already 2-0 this preseason with wins over the Seahawks and Jaguars.

This preseason is even more of a focus for Tomlin and probably why the Steelers are 2-0. This is because three quarterbacks are all fighting for the starting job come week one. Mitch Trubisky, Sam Rudolph, and Kenny Pickett are all basically auditioning for the starting role this preseason. Trubisky and Rudolph both have starting experience in the NFL, but rookie Kenny Pickett is coming into the league fresh off being the first-round pick in this year's draft. It appears as though Trubisky will have the starting position to start the season, but it is still up in the air as far as we know.

Given this situation, Tomlin is sure to be playing most of his starters on offense to give the quarterbacks the tools they need to show off what they can do. I expect the Steelers to score quite a bit tonight with hungry quarterbacks fighting for the top position.

The Lions' case is less intense. They have a lot more pieces in order for the regular season with quarterback Jared Goff and thus have said Goff and the starters will play minimally tonight. Although, even if Goff is in, will they score much anyways against a solid Steelers defense? This is one of the worst offenses in the league we're talking about, and without DeAndre Swift playing, I don't expect the Lions to score much, even if they have in the previous two preseason games. This one against the Steelers will be different.

With young and hungry quarterbacks gunning head-to-head for the starting job, I like the Steeler's chances of covering this game today. The Steelers starters will be out a lot more than the Lions, and Tomlin's track record in preseason games speaks for itself. He is one of few coaches in the NFL who put a conscious effort into preseason games, and this is maybe the most crucial preseason game we will see this August. The line has already moved from -3 to -6, and I am hopping on before it moves any further.
