There were a lot of questions about Matthew Stafford due to his lack of team success with the Lions, but he put all those questions to rest as he led the Rams to a Superbowl victory in his first season with LA. Everything clicked for the Rams last season as they had an electric offense led by Stafford, Kupp, and a running game by committee between Sony Michel and Darrell Henderson Jr.
Robert Woods was also a large contributor to their success on offense as he was a great route runner at all three levels and was also a threat in the jet sweep/screen game as well. Woods now resides in Tennessee which is a big loss for the Rams but LA retooled with the addition of Allen Robinson. Robinson has been a very productive receiver in the NFL and was able to put up back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2019/2020 with Chicago even though he wasn't always paired with the most talented quarterbacks.
Kupp was in a very similar situation prior to last season as he had only caught passes from Goff in his career. Goff is a solid QB but has been inconsistent and is no Stafford, and we saw how Kupp's game went to the next level when he got paired with a much better QB. I think Robinson will have another stellar season now that he gets the opportunity to play with Stafford and should fill the void left by Woods and then some.
We have talked about the Rams but now let's discuss the Bills. The Bills are a team that everyone has been talking about since last season as many people believe they have the talent to win the Superbowl this season.
They are led at quarterback by Josh Allen who brings a different dynamic than Stafford. Allen is extremely physical and well-built with great speed which makes him very elusive in the pocket and tough to sack. Allen's speed also brings a different dynamic to their running game as he can create plays with his legs on designed runs and also scramble for yards when the pocket breaks down.
I believe his scrambling ability will play a huge role in this game because he will have Aaron Donald breathing down his neck for most of the night. Unlike Stafford, Allen possesses the speed and quickness to evade pressure and find receivers out of the pocket which should be a big advantage to their offense. The Bills also have an RB committee in the backfield, much like the Rams, as the Bills frequently give carries to Devin Singletary (870 yards) and Zack Moss (345 yards), along with designed runs from Allen as he tallied 763 rushing yards last season as well.
The Bills offense also added a dynamic playmaker to their offense through the draft as they selected James Cook from UGA. Cook was never the featured back in a crowded backfield at UGA, but he always produced when given the opportunity. He averaged over six yards per carry every season in the Red and Black and tallied 1,503 yards, 14 TDs, and a career 6.5-yard average during his collegiate career. Cook's speed and ability to catch passes out of the backfield should add another dynamic wrinkle to an already high-powered offense. So where am I going with this handicap?
One thing that is very peculiar to me about this game is that the Rams are not favorites at home in their season opener after winning the Superbowl. They brought back pretty much all of their key contributors and even added Bobby Wagner to their defense who is an all-world linebacker and multiple-time pro-bowler, yet they are still home underdogs.
This line is showing a lot of strength towards the Bills, and I know Sean McVay has had a lot of success in season openers during his tenure as the coach of the Rams, but all good things must come to an end. We have seen Stafford make a lot of mistakes with interceptions in a few primetime games in the past and I do expect a bit of a Superbowl hangover here for the Rams to start the season.
With that being said, I am rolling with Bills ML at -125 for 1U as my most confident NFL Play of the night and my first NFL play of the 2022/2023 season. I will also have some props and other plays posted later on my Twitter page as well.
