Chicago Bears vs. San Francisco 49ers Prediction
The 49ers are turning to the top 5 draft pick, Trey Lance, as they are finally giving him an opportunity to start. Lance has a lot of raw talent but there are a lot of questions about if he is capable of being an elite NFL quarterback. Lance played extremely weak competition at North Dakota State and got his 2020 season cut short due to COVID, so he really hasn't played a full football season in almost 3 years.
In limited action last season, Lance did not necessarily play badly, but he also did not impress the 49ers offense enough to completely let go of Jimmy G. In most cases where a rookie quarterback takes the reins of the team, the team will completely release or trade the incumbent. The Bengals let go of Dalton, the Chargers let go of Taylor, and the Chiefs let go of Alex Smith. If Lance had truly instilled supreme confidence with the 49ers, then I believe they would have let go of Jimmy G and given Lance full control of the team.
I expect Lance to struggle a bit and while the Bears do not present the best defensive squad, I do not anticipate Lance to light it up in a tough environment today.
On the other side for the Bears, you have Justin Fields who made some strides in his development last year. Matt Nagy is also no longer with the bears and many people believe his play calling held Fields back in a sense. The problem for the Bears is that they basically underwent a complete roster overhaul and have very little talent at the skill positions.
Another huge problem for the Bears in this matchup is that the 49ers have an elite defense and should be primed for another deep playoff run behind Nick Bosa and this stout 49er defense. With that being said, I am rolling with the 1H UNDER 20.5 at -120 for 1U as I think we see a slow start from both of these offenses. I do not believe the Bears will find the endzone and think we will see a 10-6 or 13-3 type 1H in this game.
